Introduction
Going on a cruise can be a luxurious experience, and cruise lines will go out of their way to make you feel like a star.
But when you pull back the curtains and look at the management of a cruise line, you will often find many unwritten codes of behavior are only there for the cruise line to make money. They are not necessarily there to give you the best vacation experience.
If you are an explorer or vagabond traveler like I am, you may want to break some cruise social rules, and have your own unique experience. Here are 12 tips and tricks for the Vagabond cruiser.
1. Avoid Excursion Tours
Most cruise lines try to push passengers to go on excursion tours. These are land-based tours offered at each port where the ship docks. The cruise line often puts passengers on a bus and overcharges them for a tour.
You may have to stand in line or wait around for an hour with a tour group just to get onto the bus. Most tours involve a bus ride and then following a guide who has done the tour hundreds of times. They may expect tips, and you might also have to walk at the guide’s slow pace, or listen to their commentary.
My experience has often been that they don’t encourage independent wandering because they don’t want to lose you. I’ve been on many tours where people are requested to gather around a guide who is often holding a tall sign in the air with
