Really Rashida

Really Rashida is a Cleveland based writer, artist, and multimedia personality. She inherited her love of books and music from her mother and began reading at the age of three. Her career began in 2005 when she became an intern for the Ohio Hip Hop Awards. During her five years with the organization, Rashida was able to get a taste of what the music industry was about from behind the scenes. During that time writing never left her and she eventually found her way back to it when she started blogging in 2009. She went on to write for the event's blog until 2013. In January of that same year Rashida dropped her first book, Toxic, an urban murder mystery. Currently Rashida hosts her own podcast, writes a lifestyle blog dedicated to today's urban woman, and has an African American book review vlog. She is still living in Cleveland and is hard at work on her next novel.

    CHAPTER ONE

    Emily

Jennifer’s mom would be ashamed at the sight of her daughter scantily clad, huddled in the stall of a dirty bar bathroom. Club Honeydo was in the heart of Cleveland’s hood and a 22 year-old white girl from the small town of Gahanna, Ohio had no business working there. Jenn didn’t give a fuck though. The last thing on her mind was the sterile suburban life she grew up in. She tucked a loose strand of her messy blonde hair behind her ear then bent down and took a deep sniff. She sucked as much of the white powder as she could up her nostrils.

Hurry up, Jenn! I wanna get my line in before Hottie comes in here looking for us. Shaqueta, whom everybody called Q, held on to a folded club flyer assisting Jenn with her cocaine indulgence.

Here… Jenn leaned her head back and closed her eyes. A burning sensation overwhelmed her nose. The nasty taste of the drug got in her throat and she became disgusted. I just can’t get used to this shit, she thought but she swallowed repeatedly and got through it. She handed the piece of broken straw to her coworker and took the flyer from Q.

Eager for her own high, Q took the straw and started sucking up what was left of the nose candy. She was the one who got Jenn the job as a barmaid at The Honeydo after the two met at a Scarface Party. A Scarface Party is a private get together where cocaine users meet up and snort until they can’t no more. No crackheads or needle users and no other drugs allowed. The players at these parties consider themselves like Scarface from the movie, they only snort the best.

Jenn and her roommate Emily became fast friends because they had one thing in common: OSU wasn’t the place for them. They both believed that the best thing for them would be to quit school and get jobs to support themselves. Sophomore year they both ditched college at The Ohio State University and used their tuition money from first semester to get an apartment in Cleveland. After experimenting with drugs on campus the girls fell in love with the party lifestyle. In just a couple of months they had their drug of choice: cocaine. Jenn and Em took a liking to the high they got from the coco. They felt sexy and full of life when they were high off that shit.

When they got to Cleveland the first thing they did was seek out the drug dealers. With Jenn’s charisma and Emily knowing the city they got off to a good start. After a few months they made friends and Jenn was invited to a Scarface Party by one of the guys she was screwing around with at the time. Coincidentally, that same day she was fired from her job as a bartender at Friday’s because she got drunk on the clock and passed out in the bathroom. She brought Emily along as a plus one and the girls had the time of their lives! They found a place where they could be themselves and the two stood out as the only white girls there. Jenn and Em loved the attention. They each scored with sexy black guys that night and Jenn met Q who said she could hook both of them up with jobs at her uncle’s bar.

Two sexy white bitches like y’all? Oh yeah, y’all would bring the niggas out, Q told them excitedly and the rest, as they say, was history. A year later the girls are still there working and Jenn and Q are very close friends.

That’s all you had, Q asked Jenn as she finished off the drugs.

    Yeah. You don’t have any?

Nope. I’ma get some though. The skinny brown skinned girl snatched the flyer out of Jenn’s hand and licked it. She used her finger to rub the remnants of powder on her gums.

    Jenn shook her head.

Jenn! Girl, are you in here!?

Jenn and Q looked at each other and frowned at the sound of the fun police barging in the bathroom.

Yeah I’m in here, Em, Jenn replied. Q dropped the straw in the toilet and stuffed the flyer in the back pocket of her ripped style jeggings. Jenn used her foot to flush the toilet and the ladies exited the stall. Emily was waiting for them with her arms folded. She was pissed and they both knew why. She hated when Jenn used at work and she was being a hater in an attempt to stop her. Em was the exact opposite of Jenn in every way other that the fact that they both used drugs. The notion that opposites attract is what makes their friendship work.

What was y’all in here doing? Hottie out there tripping, she told them frustrated.

Look who got some bass in their voice, Q said unfazed. We took a break calm down, damn.

Emily looked to Jenn hoping she would say something in her defense but she went to the sink to wash her hands. Break time is over with! I’m out there by myself with Myesha and y’all know I can’t be dealing with her, Em said.

It’s dead out there, Em fuck him… Q checked her cellphone for messages.

Are you scared of her or something, Em? Why don’t you just stand up to her, Jenn asked.

The look on Emily’s face gave way to her feelings. She
