Highland Secret

Chapter 1: Dreams and Sunrise

All the woman could hear was the high-pitched screaming around her and the crashing of objects and people. The smoke filled her lungs as she tried to breathe, but no air could be found in the blackness. Her chest heaved with spasms. Coughing, Kallie crawled out of the bed, staying low to the ground where the smoke had not filled yet. She couldn’t see anything and felt around with her hands, desperately trying to find the way out of the burning structure.

Her hands finally found the exit; her hands scorched on the burning door in front of her. She made it out though, her body taking in large gulps of fresher air. It was only when she opened her eyes, her throat burning and her eyes watering, did she see that it was not just her family’s home burning, but all the crofts around her as well. Her mind went to her parents and she turned to go back in, but the engulfed straw roof collapsed, pushing chunks of fire down on her.

Kallie backed away quickly, burns on her hands and face. She started to run to her betrothed’s home and it too, was taken over by flames. Hitting her knees, she stared up at the night sky for a moment, wishes going above to God. No one was listening as she watched the whole village burn around her. Everything went quiet.

She sat up suddenly, her hands going to her throat. Kallie didn’t scream anymore, but she did still feel the burning smoke in her lungs for several minutes after waking. Some nights she dreamed of life in a bountiful land and places full of family. Other nights she remembered far too vividly what changed it all. Her whole life changed in the span of a few minutes, to something that wasn’t even recognizable. Kallie was unrecognizable. She was too bitter and full of a fire that no woman her age should have.

Kallie was a woman out for revenge. During the midst of the Highland Clearances, Kallie’s family and her soon-to-be were killed in a fire set by the landowner’s estate factor. Everything she had known and loved was burnt to ashes in that moment and Kallie was bound and determined to make those responsible pay. She moved to the coastal region where thousands of others were banished, to make way for sheep to roam. Sheep were far more important than crofters.

It was hard not to be bitter as she looked around her. The sun was barely up on the horizon and she knew she could soon look forward to kelp and potatoes. Her days were spent picking up kelp along the Scottish coast to be burned to make an alkali. All it was to her was back-breaking work for barely enough to live on. If it wasn’t for her plans that kept her mind sharp, she would have already succumbed to illness like so many around her.

Her nights were what haunted her. The sounds of her past and her present reminded her that she would never again see the clear green space of her home. Kallie grumbled as she got up from her sleeping place. Her body was sore, but she took the time to stretch a little to loosen up her tight muscles. Sometimes she yearned for the punishment that she would assuredly get if she was caught.

Heating up porridge that was made the day before, Kallie tried to dispel the feelings from the dream. She finished up her breakfast and wandered outside. There was time for a walk by the sea edge and she needed it to find her center.

She looked out at the only upside of her new life. She had only seen the sea a few times in her life before she was forced to live on the coast. Kallie enjoyed her early morning walks where she did not. Those mornings she was able to enjoy the sounds of the waves crashing on rocks and the caw of the early morning birds fighting for their meal. It was her time to think and her mind always went back to Patrick Seller.

He was the one who had burned the homes of those she loved, killing many. It wasn’t that he did it with his own hand, there were hired hands, but he was the one that sent the orders. Kallie held anger towards many over it, the governments that forced the Draconian methods, but it was the estate factor that kept her going. The hope that one day she would get the chance for revenge.

Looking up at the rising sun, Kallie smiled the only time she would that day. Her life seemed fleeting, so she treasured the small moments of beauty the most.
