About this ebook

The first time insurance claims investigator Peter Durham’s friend Arne Rasmussen had a fire on one of his ships, Peter treated it as a routine accident. The second fire he called bad luck. But when the third fire broke out, Peter knew there was no jinx, but just a very clever arsonist.

Every case has its angles, but Peter found them going in all directions this time: a man almost beaten to death, a beautiful femme fatale, a strong silent Oriental, a tough Beat Generation poet, and $600,000 in foreign currency.

But all these mysterious elements were nothing compared to the puzzle of what to do with a beautiful young lady who turned into an international incident when she became The Corpse Without a Country.

    Murder on the Puget Sound

Originally published in 1959 as part of an Ace Double along with one of Whittington's lesser-known stories, Trimble's Corpse Without A Country is an easy-to-read paperback which is primarily a nautical pulp about maritime insurance investigations in the Puget Sound area. The novel is at its best through the first third as mysterious murders on empty islands and mysterious blondes in jet boats are featured. Eventually, beatnik poetry readings in hidden cafes, drunk secretaries, strange alliances, and international intrigue takes center stage. Nevertheless, the action mostly takes place at sea, in harbors, or on deserted islands. Lots of good pulpy stuff like the bar-fight in the poetry reading cafe, the sparks flying with the now-grown up daughter of his friend Arne, the wrestling match with the blonde, the flight onto a deserted island as the hunt begins, and more. It is a pretty decent read, although not a great read.
