    Chapter 1

Here I am sitting on my front porch drinking a cup of coffee in the up-and-coming neighborhood known as Black Cove. I’m the second proud owner of a new house in this new, shiny neighborhood. I watch as the construction crew arrives to the worksite in the morning. They diligently work on home after home, completing a row of townhouses that look exactly alike. Of course they’re not all exactly alike. I chose the finishing touches like flooring, countertops, appliances, etc.

Succumbing to the pressure of my friends and family, I finally purchased my own home six months ago. I’ve always rented and figured when I met someone we would buy a home together. Now at the age of 29 there’s a good chance that ship has sailed. Not that it can’t still happen, but my friends insisted that I not wait on my plan to follow through. They’re right. There was no reason why I couldn’t buy my own home. There was no reason why I couldn’t live my life instead of waiting on a man to complete it.

The day I closed on my house six months ago was the day I decided to take charge of my life. No excuses. I took up my coworkers’ offers to go out for drinks. I joined that book club that I was always too shy to join. I indulged in fancy restaurants with my friends where I felt like maybe I didn’t belong. I said no to my Mom when she pressured me to wear a certain outfit. Lastly, I forced myself out of my comfort zone and began jogging around my neighborhood.

More accurately it’s my soon-to-be neighborhood. Black Cove was a large loop with ten completed townhouses and about forty left to complete it. Aside from me and another neighbor, Black Cove was empty. I could run around the half-mile loop without anyone looking at all of my jiggly parts. It was just concrete road
