    Manila. The sky was perfect blue and wide open above the city that seemed half under construction and half in ruin, but the air was heavy with the heat late on in the afternoon. Palm trees were the only things that reminded me that I was supposed to be here on holiday. But for them, I’d have imagined myself some kind of war reporter for the BBC, deep in dangerous territory in the latest Middle Eastern country to lose its shit. The sandy-coloured buildings, the shoeless children on the streets and the rag-tag road system, a terrifying free-for-all to an untravelled English kid like me, created a war zone theme that was completely at odds with the open, friendly people who helped me find my bus – a brightly painted army jeep from the 1970s fitted with a couple of benches – and then my hostel, a three-storey, run-down apartment building with a broken neon sign which read ALM REE HOTEL. The Alm Ree, a steal at the equivalent of two English pounds a night, was the last place in this area, crucially close to the airport for my connect tomorrow on to Cebu and all the lovely islands away from the roar of jeepneys and the open palms of street kids.
