    Zera Walthrup rolled her eyes. She knew her boss didn’t have a real emergency, but she put aside the work she was hunched over and stood from her desk immediately. Graeme Therrien wasn’t the least bit patient. As one of the largest book publishers in California, he didn’t suffer dawdling – or not being the center of undivided attention. Zera hated herself a little for jumping when he snapped his fingers, but it was all part of the game. She wanted into the publishing world and would have to eat a little shit before she could go out on her own. Working with Graeme would give her the necessary networking contacts. She’d been with him five years, since graduating college and she’d met a lot of people – mostly baristas, caterers, dry cleaners, and car detailers – the people who made Graeme’s life move smoothly. Zera wondered how he managed to wipe his own ass without help. He’d inherited the publishing house from his father. Zera managed to snag an internship and made herself indispensable enough that she was offered a job as an editorial assistant. She was the youngest, thus the lowest on the totem pole, thus the one who got stuck with the most grunt work.
