CHAPTER 1
- I’m telling you what I saw! - insisted Maria. - There were two men - one with a dark shirt and one with a white shirt. The one with the white shirt suddenly disappeared. I think the other one might have done something to him.
- Yeah, yeah! - repeated her friend Esther - You’re making it all up.
Esther hadn’t seen much – just something moving near the tower – and she was certain her friend was making things up to try and sound cool.
- I didn’t see anything either - said Aima, straining to see, but everything was blurry. The optician had prescribed her glasses, but they hadn’t bought them yet, so she could only see clearly up to about 10 feet away. The tower and all that was happening there were of course much further away.
- I bet he pushed him off and killed him - said Maria - then hid him somewhere.
- Are you sure you saw it? - asked Esther, still not quite believing it.
- Absolutely - Maria assured her - If we went to the tower now, we’d be sure to find the body hidden somewhere around there.
- Oooooh! - all three exclaimed together.
On the one hand, they were a bit spooked at the thought of what Maria had told them, but on the other it was all very exciting. The three friends - also classmates, by the way - were staying over at Esther’s house for her eleventh birthday, and had decided to go up to the roof terrace to check out the views. It was there that Maria thought she had seen the strange happening, and that was how this mystery began. They would later regret having been up on the terrace that afternoon, but right then it was the most interesting thing that had happened to them in ages.
They spent the night analysing what Maria had seen (or thought she had seen) and going over the possibilities. At long last, after hours of discussion, they decided that there was
