Chapter One:
Magickal Seduction By a Black Cat
Bored.
Sable tossed back her auburn waves of thigh-length hair, then sauntered inside the main ballroom of the privately owned gothic mansion.
Flat.
She wrinkled her nose and wished she could flip her own tail, instead of being stuck with the fake, listless cat tail of her costume. With casual flair, she set the champagne glass on the first passing tray, waiter attached, and kept on gliding into the main party area of the monstrous mansion.
Remembering not to pivot her ears in search of Yisbet's high-pitched signal, a keening sound beyond human hearing, Sable surveyed the Halloween crowd of black cats, and decided Halle Berry's version of Catwoman won out as the most favored costume—with the Eartha Kitt costume coming in a close second. If it hadn't been for the fact that most of those present were humans encased in their second-skin black cat costumes, Sable would have felt right at home.
Ooooh, Dracula black cat,
she cooed to a tall man who was obviously gay. His gaze slobbered over the boy-toy waiter passing between them. Yet he grinned at her, his fake whiskers at odd angles on his artfully painted face.
Listening for Yisbet, her long-time friend and surveillance partner, Sable wove through the crowd of partying black cats. Given the night was still young, with midnight several hours away, those around her flirted in a *keep it trendy and shallow* manner.
Felix, the cat,
Sable teased with her tone. She tweaked the paunchy man's black fur cheek. He was one of the few guests with extra love handles showing on his short frame. Likely a producer invited to this celebrity shindig, she thought.
Yeah, honey, you got some cat scratch fever for me?
he asked like Mel Brooks.
Sable paused, smiling at his good-natured comeback.
Wouldn't want to tangle with your wife. She's an Amazon compared to me.
Sable tilted her head toward the woman schmoozing with a couple of moneybag humans as Sable liked to call them.
How'd you know the redhead wearing the cat burglar costume was my wife?
Smell.
Gripping the tip of her nose with her thumb and forefinger, she wiggled it in a silly imitation of Samantha from Bewitched TV fame.
Mr. Producer grinned widely just as she heard Yisbet's signal. Sable gave him a sassy grin, then pivoted toward the long elegant bar. Sophisticated yet chic in design, the bar and the stools were covered in expensive leather. The red mahogany upholstery had been stitched in the traditional diamond design.
Sable smiled at several other men, her natural cat-like grace causing them to stare—that, and her other attractive assets. Yowls to Bastet, so her lower-body curves were more generous than allowed in tinsel-anorexia town. Truth, she sensed many a man's salivation over her.
You're late to the party.
Yisbet saluted her arrival with a Halloween-inspired cocktail. Cherry syrup served as the dripping blood.
Can't a black cat have some scary fun on All Hallow's Eve?
Sable leaned on one elbow and languorously planted her hip against the bar.
Yisbet stopped mid-sip. Her eyeballs rolled with oh-no, what now? What did you do?
"Just a little tiny wee chase. Sable paused to smile wickedly.
Just a four-footed bounce and pounce through the local haunted house."
Yisbet scowled. You're lucky no one tasered you or hit you with a blast of pepper spray.
The kiddies loved it,
Sable defended, still grinning. Most of them cheered when I chased Freddie Krueger. They clapped and hopped up and down, very happy. They were especially excited over my departing finale…
Sable waved away the willowy black-cat bartender, who strongly resembled Audrey Hepburn.
What?
Yisbet reluctantly prompted, rolling her eyes again.
I hissed and spit viciously at the human munchkins while arching my back. Then I performed the typical cat scream. Bedlam ensued, of course, the parents clacking and clucking like a brood of hysterical chickens.
What next?
Yisbet asked, surrendering to the inevitable.
I bared my scary claws and evilly flattened my ears. Then, right on cue, I sprang like a panther, straight for Frankenstein's face. Splat! Target hit. Like the wildcat I am, my claws sank into his mask.
You put the claw-death-hold on him, didn't you?
He whirled like a drunken crazy, grabbing at me.
Sable flashed a triumphant smile. Quite enjoyable until the sirens screamed in my ears.
Cocking her head, she studied her friend's expression, then offered a lighthearted grin. Are you going to report my misbehavin' feline antics?
You escaped.
Yisbet slowly let a wry grin take over her face. Without a scratch. No. Why upset the Council?
She lifted her cocktail, sipping daintily. Or, more importantly, why upset your father?
Duty to the realm...yes, to please father. Why I'm here. Observe the surface dwelling humans. I am so bored to tears.
Hissing an impatient sigh, Sable picked up the Phantasm Halloween drink Yisbet had ordered for her. She dipped the point of her tongue in first, savoring the creamy concoction.
"He hasn't shown yet. Your personal assignment." Yisbet did her Eartha Kitt purr, her imitation much superior in vibration and sound.
Magickal seduction by a black cat on Halloween. Why and how father thinks of these assignments is beyond me.
Sable shook her heavy tresses, then rolled her eyes in disgust. She indulged in a long sip of her drink.
You have got to slant your eyes to the right,
Yisbet enthused moments later.
Charlie's Angels as black cats. Oh, just too feline, skinny cutsie.
Sable's tone was fanged sarcasm.
What about the Michelle Pfeiffer Catwomen?
Yisbet rumbled a giggle.
They are adorable, actually. Why so many females to males here? That's my question. Okay, other than the *I'm in heat for a movie star* syndrome.
Sable sniffed, inhaling the cauldron-like brew of hormones permeating the entire ballroom. Gothic-beautiful and immense in size, she couldn't deny it...meow, she loved the mansion's dark-fantasy styling.
Why all the in-heat females?
Yisbet lazily shrugged. What else? Superhero sexy Devon Zant.
That, and all the wannabe starlets seeking their big break.
Sable sighed, impatience boiling a path through her. Devon Zant, superhero star. Watch out, human world.
His star is shooting, rising, whatever. Tonight is about celebrating the premiere of his new movie.
Yisbet paused, idly sipping her drink. The only reason squealing, pleading women aren't outside, acting like snakes in a mating frenzy, is because this place is hidden high in the Hollywood Hills. Even the helicopter paparazzi can't find it.
Sable gave a nod. Enough to worry about without the paparazzi buzzing us like hungry mosquitos.
Intentionally, Sable kept her back to the wall mirror behind the bar. She lapped her creamy drink, careful to enjoy her cat nature surreptitiously.
To change the subject...how many puny human brains did you have to blank to crash this black-cat party haven?
she asked.
I stopped counting at twenty. Mostly the security team outside.
Yisbet set her empty glass down, twirling it. She stretched, but retracted her cat claws quickly.
Only ten, on my way in. Ridiculously easy blanking their little minds.
Sable sinuously repositioned herself, and scanned the growing crowd. Although, to be fair and balanced.
Her tone mocked the well-known phrase. The security personnel had to be distracted by all the women arriving in sexy cat costumes.
No doubt.
Yisbet leaned forward, her topaz eyes radiant, her feline ears moving slightly. Is it time for my diligent research? The rumors are flying about Devon Zant. And, I swear on catnip, you're not going to believe it.
Humans are incomprehensible,
Sable snarled. Why father insists on comprehending their behaviors...oh never blinking-my-boredom mind.
Sable hissed a sigh.
She lowered herself to the luxurious leather barstool, draping herself in a svelte posture. Spill all, darling Yisbet.
You know how all the celebrity tabloids are always showing photos of Devon Zant with one woman or another. Well, the scuttlebutt is that he's actually gay, and those pictures are photoshopped. He doesn't date, and the movie extras say he shuns women altogether. Reports are he stays to himself, except for a small posse. And get this, there are no sex vids of him on the internet, or circulating on the dark net.
Sable chewed on her friend's words. Unusual, shunning women. I will grant that fish the sea. But, has anyone seen him with a male lover?
No. But, of course, the speculation is that he doesn't want to ruin his hot, virile, superhero image. You know,
Yisbet paused, maybe he's doing the celibacy thing.
Staying celibate for the sake of stardom, could be.
Sable took a moment to ponder. Or he has a secret lover he's miraculously kept hidden—maybe several lovers. Who knows?
She shrugged. Once I get enough of his scent though, I'll know. My cat nose never lies.
Yisbet shook her head in the negative. I tried that when he was signing autographs a few days ago. Pungent human male, but nothing else. It was as if my nose was partly neutralized.
Neutralized...curiouser and curiouser. This is
Alice In Wonderland territory, my dear friend.
After several moments of toying with her drink, Sable repeated the little she knew about Devon Zant. "The Spy Who Saved Me—his first movie. Now his current premiere, Son of Super Ace: The Long Journey Home."
Continuing to muse, she tasted more of her drink's creamy deliciousness. She shook her hair, the heaviness sensually slithering over her back. "Devon Zant must believe his real moneymaker as an actor, is his *man among men* image on screen. All potent, all alpha male—silly human females dangling and dripping off
