SAM’S SOLDIERS

Chapter One

Sam scanned the ER. It was standing room only for the fifth day in a row. A new wave of party drugs hit town and it guaranteed a constant flow of disoriented, violent young patients and their terrified families and friends. Currently, three of them were being kept in their beds with the help of four-point restraints, and under guard to ensure they didn’t try to hurt themselves or anyone else. Thank God for the security staff or it would be impossible for him to complete his work.

It seemed this latest batch of caustic chemicals provided the user with some damn serious hallucinations lasting over twenty-four hours. One young teen had been found weaving through rush hour traffic on foot. Naked. The nineteen-year-old boy explained he was trying to outrun the tiger that was stalking him—of course said tiger had pink stripes, spoke French, and was seven feet tall. Sam still sported the fat lip he received from another disoriented young woman who had been attempting to pull the IV line out of her arm. Ah, the glamorous life of an ER nurse but I wouldn’t work anywhere else.

Sam laughed at his own thoughts while going through his final checks before handing his patients off to the evening shift. Once the handoff was given to the next shift and his reports were complete, he was running for the door as quickly as his legs would carry him. Considering he was still suffering from the effects of a knife wound to his left thigh, perhaps limp would be a more accurate description. Either way, he was outta there.

It had been a little over four weeks since Sam and his friend and soon-to-be cousin-in-law, Johnny, were attacked by his cousin Gabe’s ex-boyfriend, Chris. The man was unstable and addicted to methamphetamines, a dangerous combination and almost lethal for Johnny. But two unexpected things came out of that month from hell: Gabe fell in love and proposed to Johnny, and the two hot, tattooed ex-soldiers sent to protect Johnny were now waiting at home for Sam.

Yes, he knew he was a lucky man. At first when Dante and Jack—better known as Spider—had approached him with this arrangement, Sam had been a little shocked. Why would two men who were already lovers want to include him as their third? Well, their third lover for the time they remained in Brighton. That was the deal he’d made and now regretted. The three had been living together in Sam’s house since his men checked out of their hotel after the first week they’d arrived.

In the past five weeks, he had lost part of himself to these men, given away the one thing he thought was safe, his heart. But Sam knew it was only a matter of time until they left on one assignment or another and back to their real lives together, without Sam.

Hey! You tattooed freak, get over here, Mr. Renfrew ordered from his bed in the far corner of the ER. Mr. R. was a frequent flyer at Brighton General and one of the town’s few bigots. Brighton welcomed all comers and family units, but there always seemed to be a few close-minded individuals kicking around. Can you hear me or did all that ink fry your brain?

What’s the problem, Mr. Renfrew? Sam asked, knowing exactly what was coming next. The now smiling sixty-year-old slid his tray of food to the edge of the rollaway table and flicked it to the floor.

Oh, look what happened. I guess you’ll just have to clean that up.

No, housekeeping will be called down to help you with that. Have a good night, Mr. Renfrew. Sam turned and walked toward the nursing station. In the background, he could hear good old Mr. R. cursing up a storm.

Sam wasn’t sure which bothered the man more: the fact that Sam was gay or that he had two full sleeves of tattoos, and those were only the ones that could be seen when he was wearing his scrubs. Personally, Sam didn’t care. The man had it out for him since he first saw him over five years ago.

Mr. R. needs housekeeping. His tray fell off his table…again. Sam sighed in frustration.

Oh, those damn tray poltergeists, can’t they just stay in their own dimension? Joanne laughed and bumped Sam in the arm, making him smile with her corny sense of humor. Joanne had the ability to brighten even the crappiest of situations. I’ll call them to come deal with him. You go home to those hot men of yours.

Thanks, Joanne. I’m looking forward to having the next four days off. Sam rubbed the tight muscles on the back of his neck, trying to give himself a bit of relief.

You boys have anything planned? Joanne asked while filling out the seemingly never-ending pile of paperwork on the desk in front of her.

Nope, just kicking back and relaxing. I need some down time in the worst way. Sam groaned as he stretched out his sore back.

Joanne grabbed the files out of his hands and began ushering Sam toward the locker room. Okay then, off you go.

But…

With one final push from his friend, Sam was on his way home to the two men who filled him with a joy he could never fully embrace. The threat that they would soon leave always hung over his head. It was just a matter of time.

His house was lit up when Sam pulled the big-ass four-wheel drive SUV Dante and Spider insisted he drive into the garage. He looked fondly at his classic green 1965 VW Beetle convertible tucked safely into the corner. He missed the old girl, even if his men said it was a death trap. It was only slightly rusted, and he only had to fill the passenger tire with air once a day now. Other than that, she was almost perfect, as long as you never tried to move the driver’s seat or adjust the mirrors.

Soon, my beautiful car, we’ll go out soon for a drive, Sam vowed.

Not if I have anything to say about it, Spider stated from the door leading into the house from the garage. That car will get you hurt or even killed, which is not acceptable.

Sam turned so quickly, he got his injured leg hung up on the tarp covering his car. His lunch bag went flying as he braced himself for the pain of hitting the concrete floor, but it never came. Sam had no idea how a man standing six foot five inches tall and weighing over two hundred and sixty pounds of muscle could move that fast, but the fact that he wasn’t kissing cold stone at the moment confirmed he could.

See, if it’s not the car putting you in danger, it’s the tarp covering the damn thing, Spider whispered into Sam’s ear before straightening him up and placing him safely back on his feet. Enfolding Sam in his huge arms, Spider leaned forward, pressing his face in Sam’s curly red hair, and inhaled deeply. He loved it when Spider wrapped himself around Sam’s smaller body, as if he was protecting him from the world.

It wasn’t the tarp’s fault or my baby. I’m just tired and clumsy, Sam explained, and Spider tucked him even closer into the curve of his muscled body.

What’s with the fat lip, sweetheart? Spider asked as he gently turned Sam’s face from side to side.

Just another night in the ER. You know how it’s been lately. We lost a fifteen-year-old girl today because of that poison they’re peddling. There was nothing we could do. Sam felt that same sick churning in his stomach he always got after he lost a patient.

Sam, I’m so sorry. Something needs to be done. Spider’s voice held barely suppressed anger but Sam knew it wasn’t directed at him. I know the police chief is taking down as many of these new dealers as he can, but another crop of them just pops up after the first ones are arrested.

Maybe you and Dante could have a look around? If anyone could figure this out, it’s the two of you, Sam said without an ounce of doubt, his men could figure this out.

Perhaps. Let’s get you inside. Supper is almost ready. Dante’s cooking chicken parmigiana with pasta, Caesar salad, and garlic bread. Spider tilted Sam’s head upward and kissed him as if his life depended on it. The touch as explosive as ever.

Wow, a greeting like that and all my favorite food for supper. What did I do to deserve this? Sam teased as he straightened Spider’s shirt.

Spider took his hand and led him into the house and to a kitchen that smelled of garlic, tomato sauce, and cheese, all the things Sam loved, along with the third man of their triad, whom he also loved. Dante was slightly taller than Spider but a bit less muscled, which wasn’t saying a lot because there was still a whole lot of it filling the room. Mine.

Sam had to stop himself from immediately running into the man’s arms. He’d greeted Spider, and now he felt an almost desperate need to have Dante pressed against him. Dante turned as they neared the counter and immediately opened those strong arms, to which Sam responded by taking a running jump into his embrace.

How was your day, Trouble? Dante asked before kissing him long and hard, not letting go until they both needed
