About this ebook

Joyce drove through the streets looking at all the houses. It was something she did every weekend when she took her grandparents on an outing. Their chance meeting with Roy and his children made one of their outings even more special.

Roy was a married man with two children and the third on the way. He wasn’t happy but he faced every challenge life sent him.

Joyce bought the ideal home. What wasn’t ideal was that she had to put up with the noisy wife and children next door. She knew their circumstances weren’t stellar but she didn’t want to reach out or interfere.

The turning point came when the neighbor’s children landed up on her doorstep. She couldn’t turn them away.

Roy’s wife took matters into her own hands and everything changed. Joyce and Roy’s lives veered off in a totally different direction!

Prepare yourself for an interesting read with a lot of punchy dialogue. This is a family saga about a very strong woman. An independent woman dedicated to her family.

    Chapter 1

Joyce stopped the van and looked at the house. It seemed so small. She wanted something much bigger and spacious. What she saw held no appeal to her. The garden was full of weeds and it looked as though the lawn hadn’t been mowed in months. After sitting and looking at the house she decided she wasn’t ready to leave her pokey little flat. She didn’t say a word and kept on driving towards the beach. Joyce parked the van and climbed out and walked over to the stall and bought three big ice cream cones. Joyce walked back to the van and climbed in and handed her grandparents their ice creams.

So I assume you were interested in buying that house, Phil said.

"Granddad my flat is so small. There is no view of the sea and I can’t even smell there is an ocean nearby. When I look out of the window I see more and more flats all the way around. I want a home. A real house but I will not buy the first house I see. I want space. When I buy a house it will be turned into a home with lots of bedrooms and space to study. My studies haven’t stopped. That will continue until there is nothing left to study.

Agatha nodded as she ate her ice cream. Joyce, keep looking. I think we have already looked at about thirty houses. We rather like the van you have rented. We will look until we find the perfect house. I must say, though, you are looking in really crummy areas. That is probably the tenth house we have looked at where the gutters are dangling from the roof, Agatha said.

Joyce gurgled with laughter. Gran I scan the papers and look at what I can afford. Well, in a certain range. I might have to take the bicycle out and dust it off and then I might afford one of these houses, Joyce said to her Gran.

Phil sat and laughed. I think we are safer in the van than actually climbing out. Some of those gardens look as though they are infested with wildlife yet to be discovered, he said. Once we have finished our ice creams please take us to the decent side of The Bluff where normal people live. Where the lawns are mowed. I have never seen anyone come out of these houses. For all we know they might have two heads, he said.

Granddad, this is The Bluff even if it is the cheaper side. I have to look here because this is what I can afford, Joyce said.

Move in with us at the old age home. Better the devil and all of that. By the time you reach your bedroom the old timers will already be tired of running and you will be safe, he said.

Gramps sometimes you have a one track mind. Don’t you think they would turf me out based on my age, she said.

    We could try, Phil said.

Joyce started the van as they all finished their ice creams. Take us through the snobby part of The Bluff. Let’s take a look at the expensive houses. The road on the beach please, Joyce, Agatha said. Joyce smiled as she drove on the winding road with the beach to the left and the houses to the right. She kept stopping so they could admire the expensive houses. Agatha pointed at a lovely home. I rather like that one, Joyce. That is more your style. It is neat and tidy. Rather mod and it is empty with a for sale sign up, Agatha said.

Gran it is beautiful. But I think it is a little too pricey for me. Don’t look now but there is a family coming out of that little cottage at the back of the house next door, Joyce said.

He is pushing a pram all the way down the hill. And he has his little girl on his hip. He is probably taking them to the beach, Phil said as he opened his window wide open. Good day to you!

Roy stopped and smiled. They aren’t in. They are in the Bahamas for six weeks. Can I help?
