Chapter 1: A History of Foosball
Introduction
Many games throughout history have gained a following of vast and impressive proportions, and a few have even been lost to time or relegated to that dark, uncertain place in human history where lost things go to dwell.
Among them all however is a game that has been discovered, allowed to visit that lost area, and then been dusted off in order to capture the attention of players once again.
Combining more than one element of play, this game has been known far and wide by many different names, and has been recreated in various different forms as well.
That game is Foosball.
Also known as table football, that’s soccer for those in the US that sometimes get the two confused, Foosball is a very simple game from the outset, but possesses more than one layer of play once you truly get into it.
Its design is just as simple, with wooden or plastic players
that are set into position upon their poles, each side defending a goal over a miniature table that is often designed to look like a soccer field.
Who Created Foosball?
When speaking of its history the story isn’t quite clear as to how and when Foosball began, but there are plenty who would swear by the ever-popular theory that it was devised in the 1880’s as more of a simplistic parlor game.
Others would claim that it was the innovation of one Lucien Rosengart, who was at that time a minor player when it came to inventing various items and practicing the arts of engineering.
Rosengart was said to have a great many patents, not the least of which were for parts that had to do with railways, bicycles, a special type of rocket that would allow artillery shells to detonate in midair, and even such items as the seat belt.
He claimed that the game had been an invention he’d thought up in order to keep his grandchildren active throughout the winter months.
Not long after his children’s favorite pastime was shown to the general public the tables began to make an appearance in cafes all over France. The tiny players were even bedecked in the colors of the French flag so that anyone who saw this device was reminded that the French were far superior in their methods of thinking.
Yet the idea of who built the first Foosball table has never gone without some form of dispute.
In fact, Alexandre de Finesterre, a poet and editor, claims that during his time spent in a hospital after being injured as a result of a raid in the Spanish Civil War, he observed a group of youngsters who had been laid up similarly to him. Taking this into account he decided to create a way that they could enjoy the game while being unable to play outside.
Thus the beginnings of an idea were started, and Foosball was on its way to being realized.
After talking with a local carpenter by the name of Francisco Javier Altuna, Alexandre then went on to patent his idea. Likening the game to the concept of table tennis, he went ahead and created a game in
