    JUDGING THE BOXER

    There is perhaps in the mind of every judge an eternal hope that, today, as he goes into the ring to judge his Boxers, he will arrive at his long-sought goal, the Perfect Dog, the kind of dog he has mentally cherished for many years; and that on this day the glory of discovery will be his!

    This perfect dog would incorporate all the good features the judge had seen in great pillars of the breed, such as the revered Sigurd whose advent in America was really the true Boxer impetus in show rings on this side.

    Sigurd’s imposing carriage and movement, which made him so conspicuous in competition, will be remembered by the author when first he judged him; nor will his last view of him, at the age of ten years, be forgotten since, even then, Sigurd had all the characteristics of a great dog, and made many proselytes who are devotees of the Boxer to this day.

    Then, when enthusiasm for the breed began to grow, it was sharply accelerated by the arrival of another great one, Dorian von Marienhof, which brought us, besides physical perfection, an abundance of style with a lithe, flashy movement that took by storm not alone fanciers of the breed but proponents of other breeds as well.

    Always with thoughts of dogs like these in mind and, too, with thoughts of those others, living today, which seem destined to carry on the very best Boxer tradition, we are confident that our Perfect Boxer would borrow something from them all!

    What do we look for in a Boxer? One that is the embodiment of refined power and substance, with an active mobility which would convey the possible and active use of it at a moment’s notice if necessary. He should not lean decisively to the Bulldog type of his ancestors, with overdone musculation heavy and clumsy—this would greatly hamper the activity which makes him a useful dog. Nor should he resemble the terrier, either, in type or flat musculation, for in this event he would possess a springy movement, and he would in general evince
