How to Decorate your Bedroom - Helen Koues

REQUIREMENTS of a bedroom FOR TWO

When a bedroom is to be used by two people, the comfort of the two people should be the first consideration and, then, the so-called decorating. There must be the necessary furniture, color, and light which will suit both. A man, as well as a woman, should have something to say about a room he will share. Be sure the color is one a man likes. Be sure there is an adequate reading light, a night table to share; or, better, a table and light by each bed. Be sure a man as well as a woman has an adequate chest or bureau and, if possible, that there is a closet for each. Two small closets are better than one large one. If a room has only one closet, see if a pair of closets could be built in, one on each side of a window. One could be fitted with drawers, thereby eliminating the need for an extra chest and utilizing every bit of space.

in colonial or modern houses it is usual, but not imperative, to follow in bedroom furnishing the general type of the house. If you have a Cape Cod house, Early American maple furniture would be a wise choice. In a more formal Colonial house, 18th Century mahogany is appropriate. Or, if you like a touch of Modern, so-called contemporary decorating may appeal to you. But whatever you do, don’t have a drab, nondescript room. If you must use furniture you have, see what you can do with walls, fabrics, and rugs to complement your furniture and thus make an attractive room.

arrangement varies somewhat in different types, but not a great deal. Beds are usually on the long wall, but be sure they are placed to the best advantage, if possible, so that they do not face the light in the morning or a street light at night. Single beds may be put together as shown to the right, or a night table and lamp may be put between beds.

Or, again, twin beds may be placed definitely apart, on opposite sides of the room with a window between them. Often eyes are protected from light by this arrangement.

When the beds, dressing table and bureau are properly placed, the other pieces should be arranged to balance them. A chair and table and desk should be near a window, of course A flat-topped desk may be set at right angles to the wall to get a good light.

There is nothing like a plan to explain furniture arrangement. Below is a room which may be decorated in any price bracket, either as shown here or for the proverbial song. Use mattress and springs on legs with a pillow roll for a headboard; rose or blue gingham for bedspreads and dressing-table skirt; wallpaper panel above beds and sprigged or plaid gingham curtains

The simplicity of this room lends itself to various color schemes: one is rose wall, gold curtains and rug, and ruffled net coverlets and dressing-table skirt over pale rose; another is striped gray-and-yellow walls, green-gray chintz with roses, rose carpet, and rose-and-beige
