THE PUBLISHERS’ ADDRESS TO THE READER.

THIS little volume is one of the Homeland Handbooks, a series founded in 1897 with the view of providing adequate information respecting localities and districts in Great Britain. It is one of the aims of the Homeland Association to show that every district of these islands possesses scenery of beauty and often of peculiar distinction, often, moreover, hallowed by inspiring memories; and the Handbooks are written from this standpoint. They are issued at popular prices, and contain everything likely to interest the intelligent visitor regarding the History, Traditions, Worthies Antiquities, and Literary Associations of the neighbourhoods with which they deal.

In each case the book is written by a qualified author, with special local knowledge.

Other volumes in the series likely to interest the reader of this book are as follows:—

    MAPS.

The district described in this volume is covered by the following maps of H.M. Ordnance Survey:—

The Manager of the Homeland Association will be happy to supply any of the above on receipt of the published price plus postage (any scale 1d. per map).

    HINTS FROM THE SELBORNE SOCIETY.

The Selborne Society would put forward a very urgent plea for preserving the beauties of Nature. Want of thought on the part of a few deprives many of enjoyment. Every one can bring some influence to bear upon the matter, and a few suggestions are here offered:

WILD PLANTS should never be rooted up or gathered in great quantities, and never picked simply to be thrown away.

WILD BIRDS should not be disturbed in the breeding season.

BUTTERFLIES and other pretty insects should not be collected indiscriminately. RARE SPECIES should in all cases be specially respected and protected. There are plenty of interesting creatures to be studied without killing those that give pleasure to every one.

WASTE PAPER, Broken Glass and the Rubbish from Picnics should never be left about.

The Writing and Cutting of Names on trees and buildings is a foolish practice, which causes needless disfigurement.

    42, BLOOMSBURY SQUARE, LONDON, W.C.

    AUTHOR’S NOTE.

IN sending out this little book, the author would take the opportunity of expressing his thanks to all who have in any way assisted him, particularly to Mr. Edward Windeatt, of Totnes, whose stores of knowledge have been so kindly placed at his disposal.

    EDITORIAL NOTE.

It is with great pleasure that the Editor has been able to avail himself of the opportunity of adding to the series of Homeland Handbooks a volume dealing with such a delightful area of our country. It is hoped that this volume will meet with as favourable a reception as did the same author’s Homeland Handbook, Falmouth, Truro and the River Fal, and that it will, at least, prove of equal interest and practical value to the visitor. May it be the means of inducing many to become acquainted with the charming scenery and historic memories of this, one of the most lovely spots in the Homeland.
