When reading accounts of Arthur Peppercorn’s life and career, the author said it was difficult, if not impossible, to find a harsh word said against him. This book is a decent tribute to the LNER’s last Chief Mechanical Engineer, who died after only a few months in retirement at the age of just 63.

In the same editorial style as works on Sir Nigel Gresley and Edward Thompson, this is a new insight into the private and professional life of a relatively unknown figure, and colourised images once again break up the text well.

Peppercorn is described as a talented production engineer
