The Church of England originally took a dim view of the Colne Valley & Halstead Railway running trains of locally-made bricks on Sundays, but changed its view when it learned that they were on their way to construct 16 holy buildings in north London. Nothing more was said.

Such was life in the 19th century, when you could choose two direct railway routes between Colchester and Cambridge (there are none now). Although the CVHR Service via Haverhill might not have been the first choice, and probably less comfortable, it was actually shorter and faster than the Great Eastern alternative.
