    Hello!

Sometimes small decisions change the course of your life.

The question that can never be answered is the question of what would have happened if you had taken another path.

If you had said no instead of yes. If you had turned right instead of left. What if...

These thoughts don’t really get you very far.

It is interesting in retrospect to be aware of the little things that paved the way for what was to follow. Each of us carries our own baggage of past experiences and memories with us, which give meaning, or not, to these small things.

A commitment to an invitation drew my life in a new direction within only a few hours.

I can only say that this fateful Christmas changed my life forever.

Hereafter, I have immortalized this Christmas and the experiences that came before it. I am glad to share them with you now.

    Yours Lea Comtesse

    December 24th 2014. 3:48pm

Christmas is right around the corner. My brother Hannes’ teasing tone is unmistakable, even over the phone. How nice of him to announce the news so cheerfully!

Yes, I mumble through my non-existent beard, and I do not intend to turn the corner.

Christmas comes famously but once a year, usually in December.

Hannes lets out a short laugh, then he sings: Christmas is just around the corner!

Of course he can have a good laugh. And of course he feels like singing. The festival of togetherness is approaching and he found his lady love a long time ago.

Single Bells, Single Bells, Single all the way … now resounds in a sing song voice from the telephone.

I snort annoyed and my brother tries to calm me: Come on! You‘ve survived every Christmas so far.

He’s right there. The point is just to get you through it. Getting through something for me really is nothing more than surviving it. In other words, let out your inner Chuck Norris and grit your teeth. Is there such a thing as a Survival Boot Camp for Christmasphobics?

I’ve never been a big fan of Christmas. That manifested itself in my childhood. Our family celebrations always ended with a substantial family quarrel and silent hostility under the tree, while we could hear cheerful singing ringing out from next door. We were also fed into a stupor every year by our grandparents. It took my mother years to give up preparing our own family meal as well. In other words, any desire for Christmas celebration had been sated for all eternity!

Now, I no longer live with my parents of course.

In the intervening years I have overcome my aversion to being fattened up at Christmas, but unfortunately I now have quite a different problem.

Christmas is a time when everyone wants to be happy and surrounded by loved ones. Which is stupid, when you have no one and all your friends are spoken for.

Brigitte’s preparing raclette. The effort would be worth it if there weren’t just the two of us.

Oh, right, I’m still on the phone with my brother.

    Is that an invitation?

What else? Come to us for Christmas! We’ll put Quirin to bed about 7, then we can eat in peace.

Brigitte and my brother became parents six months ago. They decided to celebrate the 25th of December with just a small circle of family and to spread out their visits to
