    Introduction

    The Ketogenic diet has been around in western medicine since the 1920’s, but knowledge of the science behind it dates back to ancient Greece. When you limit the consumption of sugars and trigger the creation of ketones you cause the body and brain to use fats instead of sugars for energy. That’s the process in a nutshell.

    Following this diet means eating a lot of natural fats, moderate protein, and very little carbohydrates. Sticking with this diet will result in less body fat, reducing seizures in epileptic patients, less chance of disease, and a myriad of other health benefits.

    It’s important to consult a doctor before starting this diet, as people with certain conditions may not do well with the ketogenic diet. Some of these conditions are people with gallbladder disease, gastric bypass patients, children, pregnant women, people with metabolic disorders, pancreatic insufficiency and certain other disorders. The reason this diet isn’t recommended for certain individuals is simply because these people either don’t digest fat very well or as is the case with children and pregnant women, they need a higher amount of protein.
