    PROLOGUE

I just want to be honest with myself. When I first started writing this I didn’t know I would still be writing after all this time. There were a few times that I thought I would be dead, so I gave myself closure at the end of the page not knowing if the next day I would pick up my notebook and write more. This started out as a record of whom and what we were and are, a way of telling someone that yes I did exist and so did my family. Slowly it changed into a piece of history for those who come after us.

I want to say I love you mom and dad. I could not be in the place I am now if you had not taught me to be a strong individual. I want to say thank you to Uncle Roy, also to Jason, Brett and Jerry. My life would surly have ended if it weren’t for the lessons that all of you imparted to me, whether I wanted to learn them or not. And a special thank you to Paul for the greatest gift of all, and never giving up. I swear I will never give up on you.

I know I’m not the same person I was when I started this. I was a child who grew into a woman, a subordinate who became a leader, and a person who turned into a monster. Everything I have done I will be judged by; I can only hope that this will provide the understanding, as it is too much to expect forgiveness.

    PART I

    WILLOW

    CHAPTER 1

If you’re reading this, that means some people made it. And there’s still hope for all humanity. These last few days have been hell, just sitting here waiting for it all to end. So I thought I should write it all down, as a warning, a guide… something. To put a face to the horror that is now my world let me tell you about me, then the tragedy that struck us all.

My name is Willow Tree Matheson. I was fifteen when it happened. My birthday falls on Halloween. I was an average kid, a B+ student. I wanted to try out for the cheerleading squad when school started. I was looking forward to getting my driver’s license. I’ve never done drugs. I wanted to be a translator for the United Nations when I got older. I speak several languages; English, Spanish, French, Italian, Greek and German. I was just starting to learn Japanese when all this started. I had planned on studying the Russian language and culture in college. I’ve been studying languages since I was three. All of us kids started when we were three. My mom thought it was a good idea because she liked to take us on her research projects in other countries.

I don’t know how relevant what I look like is, but I have shoulder length reddish brown hair with hazel green eyes. At the time I was a bit thick, not fat but curvy. I figured I would trim down cheerleading. I’m five feet four inches tall.

I also have a cat named Teddy. Actually his name is Mister Theodore Hinkle Winkle; what can I say, I named him when I was five. He is a calico Maine Coon. He is very large for a cat, about twenty pounds. He now goes everywhere with me in my backpack. I keep everything important to me in there. It contains all the stuff I have left.

I had a ten year old brother, David; and a six year old sister, Rose. My mom, Jean, and my dad, David, were about to celebrate their eighteenth wedding anniversary. My mom was a marine biologist, focused on marine conservation. She’s what some people would call a tree hugger. If she had been around in the sixties she’d have been a hippie. Her hobby was astronomy. My dad was a painter. Not like an artist, but an industrial painter. He did houses and buildings. He liked to play softball on the weekends.

We lived in a little town called Hudson, located on the south portion of the Oregon coast. It’s only a few miles north of California. It’s a little town with a population of about 3000 people. It’s very rural. I can see the ocean from the upstairs bedroom windows.

It all started in July, over a year ago. On the news meteorologists were saying we would be able to see a meteor shower that would only be visible for the night of July the sixth. The meteor shower was called Sabine’s Shower. It hadn’t past our way in over 8000 years. This would be
