    Sarah

    The hard ground beneath my feet was starting to soften. It was the first sign that we were getting close to the jungle that protected The City of Hope and I was glad of it. The desert wasteland that lay between the farming towns and the great city were too hostile. There was no protection from the blistering sun that shone down through the day and there was no protection from the sharp sandstorms that filled the nights.

    I couldn’t see the tree line on the horizon yet, but I was sure that once we had crossed the tall sand dunes that green leafy trees would be all that my eyes could see. I looked back at Natasha, who was starting to lag behind me. I could feel my own legs burning and I was used to walking great distances, so I knew that her body must have been reaching the point of shutting down all together. Do you need to rest? I asked her, when she’d reached me at the bottom of the first sand dune that we would need to climb.
