    Chapter One

Sensing a sudden change in the air, Elizabeth Dorey felt her heart skip a beat.

    He was here.

She took a deep breath and willed her nerves to relax. It wasn't as if he was here to see her particularly. He probably just wanted to talk about their sales like all those other times he had visited.

Yep. Their sales. Nothing to worry about.

Praying that she was right, she looked up from the report she'd been reading and felt her throat tighten when she saw him standing at her doorway, his dark gaze watching hers.

    Luke Astorino.

A shiver coursed through her as she remembered the way those eyes had watched her that fateful night two weeks ago. It should have been unnerving to hold eye contact during such an intimate act, but instead, she’d felt connected to him.

It was as if their souls had linked somehow and she hadn't wanted to look away and risk losing the connection. Knowing that she was only fooling herself, she shook her head and rose from her chair.

    Mr. Astorino.

Astorino. The name sounded so strange on her lips. From all the years she had known him, she’d always just called him Luke.

They'd always been on friendly terms and had never been formal toward each other, but considering the way she'd moaned and screamed his name oh-so-many times that night, she didn't think she could ever say his given name again without her cheeks turning a deep red.

He nodded at her. Liz, he said in the same bone-melting voice he'd used to coax multiple orgasms out of her. She groaned inwardly at the thought.

She had to forget that night. Luke's Blue Tech was their company's largest vendor and she had done the unspeakable. You simply don't sleep with people you do business with. Trying not to think of how badly she’d messed up, she forced a smile. What can I do for you?

Taking his time, he walked toward one of the chairs in front of her table, reminding her of a lion who stalked its prey before attacking. He sat down and stretched his arm around the chair beside him as he studied her with unreadable eyes.

She resisted the urge to look away. To do so would be a weakness, and she couldn’t afford that. After what seemed to be forever, he finally spoke. You left in quite a hurry the last time we were together and I want to know why.

    She froze, surprised.

She couldn't believe he had just brought that up. Knowing how big of a mistake it had been for the both of them, she'd assumed that they would never talk about it.

I had work, she said lamely as she sat down.

It wasn't exactly a lie. There was always something that needed to be done and she did go to the office eventually.

She could still remember how ridiculously happy she'd felt lying in his arms. For a moment, she had actually let herself believe in the fantasy that they were in a relationship before reality had come crashing down on her.

It had just been sex. If there were any deeper feelings, it was surely only on her side. In all of the years that she'd known him, he'd never once expressed interest in her as a woman.

Though it was the last thing she had wanted to do, leaving that morning had been the most sensible thing that she could have done. After spending just one night with him, she’d already felt as if she was right where she belonged.

    I see.

His voice was deceptively calm, but she could feel the anger bubbling underneath.

It was unnerving to see the passionate man she’d seen the other night so cold, and she hated the thought that she’d done this to him. She'd never seen him angry before and the fact that he was angry at her made it all the worse. Worrying her bottom lip, she thought of what to say and came up with nothing.

    Regrettably, she understood his anger.

Even if it was just a one-night stand, she shouldn't have left so cowardly. But it had been a form of self-preservation. When she’d awoken in his arms, all she’d wanted to do was stay in his arms forever.

She gulped and looked back at him. His jaw was hard-set, his eyes calculating as he watched her.

It was as if they were playing a game of poker and he was contemplating calling her bluff. It was obvious he didn't believe her, but she couldn't think of anything that would've made things up to him.

It wasn't as if she could've called him afterward. She was under no delusion as to the way he affected her. If he'd so much as hinted that he wanted a repeat of that night, she would've been back at his apartment in an instant.

Then, I guess you would be willing to have dinner with me? he asked tauntingly.

    She blinked.

He had to be kidding. They were already lucky that no one had seen them leave his party together. If word ever got out that they had slept together, he could be accused of giving her company preferential treatment and she would be accused of sleeping with him for a distributorship.

I don't think that's such a good idea, she answered cautiously. Because no matter how much she told herself that that night was a mistake, she wanted nothing more than a repeat. And since her resolve was too damned weak, it was best to avoid him at all costs.

Arrogant eyebrows rose. It's just dinner. You didn't mind my company two weeks ago.

Her throat tightened as she remembered that night. Nothing could've prepared her for him focusing all his attention on her, looking at her with so much desire that the air around them had sizzled. It had been her ultimate fantasy come to life and she had seized the opportunity with both hands.

And now that she finally knew what it was like to be with him, she was filled with a lifetime of regret. How could she stand it, knowing how it felt to be in his arms, but never experiencing it again?

She had bitterly found out that there were some things she was better off not knowing.

That, as you know, was a mistake, she said flatly as she tried to hide her disappointment. We do business together. We should've never let that happen.

She still couldn't believe that he had brought it up. It would've been easier to avoid each other. It was certainly the easier route. No awkwardness, no trying to explain what had happened. No pointing fingers at who had started what.

After that night, she’d even thought it safe to say that she wouldn't see him for at least a year. As the CEO of Blue Tech, it would've been easy to avoid her without raising suspicion. It wasn't his job to go around visiting distributors.

In fact, before that night, he hadn't visited her office in almost a year, which was why she'd gone to his party that night in the first place. After not seeing him for so long, she'd begun to wonder if she had finally gotten over her feelings for him.

    She’d been wrong.

The moment her gaze had landed on him, she'd felt her heart lurch forward so quickly that it was a wonder how she had gone so long without seeing him. It was as if he'd flipped a switch inside of her, making her suddenly feel alive.

And what if the partnership between our companies ceases to exist if it doesn't happen again?

She laughed at the unexpectedness of
