Fantasies For Men - N.C. East

    Chapter 1 (THE FINAL BATTLE)

You are standing in front of your army atop a grassy hill just outside of the city walls of the small city of Bergashire. You have been leading a military campaign for your king for the past several months and are almost home. It has been a long, hard-fought journey and your men have been nothing but loyal. You have expanded the borders of the kingdom and solidified the king’s rule over rebels on the outskirts of the kingdom.

You conquered Bergashire early on in your campaign. On your return home from the outlands of the kingdom you decided to pass by the tiny city once again. It was a fateful choice because the expelled king has raised a band of warriors and is making one final attempt at grabbing hold of his former city. This young king and his ragtag band of a hundred or so soldiers is all that is standing in the way of you and your men from returning home.

You have with you three hundred soldiers and a troop of two dozen of your most elite soldiers, all at your command. The ousted king is readying his men a quarter of a mile away, down the hill and across a plain. There is nothing but openness to your left and a dense forest to your right. The city behind you has already been taken in the name of your king by the lives of your men and you do not plan on handing it back.

You have two options. You can lead the charge down the hill with all of your men or you can sneak off into the forest to the right where you and your elite group of warriors can flank the tiny, opposing army and quicken the battle. It is your decision. Your men are awaiting your command.

If you charge down the hill, go to Chapter 2A (CHARGE)

If you flank through the forest, go to Chapter 2B (FLANK)

    Chapter 2A (CHARGE)

You turn your horse and face your men. You lift your sword and silence them. They raise their swords and ready their shields as they watch you, confident on your horse, your armor shining in the sun.

Men! You shout and pause. All that is between us and home is them! Victory shall be ours! You are the best of the best and they–they are nothing! They are in denial of their own defeat and we must make them clearly see reality! Charge!

With that you pivot on your horse and begin the charge down the hill. Your screaming men, some on horse and some on foot, follow behind you. The ousted king and his small force are shocked by your quick charge. They begin to run in your direction, disjoined and their faces covered in fear.

Your forces collide with shouts and the rattle of clanging swords. You sling your sword left, then right and take two men down in almost seamless movements. One of your men behind you falls and you kill his killer with a slice of your sword to his neck. Your horse rears as a man juts a long spear in your direction. It smashes into your shield and splinters to oblivion. Your shield, a sturdy but worn metal, cracks in the middle. You slice at the spearman with your sword and take one of his arms off.

Keep going, men! You shout as you make eye contact with the rebellious king. He is filled with fear as his men are falling left and right.

You charge forward, over the bodies of his men and some of even your own. Your horse gallops over the blood soaked grass as you begin pursuit of the rogue ruler. He is too cowardly to stand and fight you. You slash down man after man who tries to stop you from reaching him. His flight is useless. Your steed quickly catches up to his and with one swipe of your sword his head topples off his body.

Your king is dead! You shout to the surviving defiant warriors as you lift the dead man’s head from the ground with your sword and hold it high for all to see. The sounds of war soften as attention turns towards you and your trophy. Put down your swords and you will see mercy! Continue fighting and you will be killed! Hail your new king! Swear your allegiance to he and I and I will spare your lives!

Never! A man shouts as he charges you. With one swipe of your cracked shield you take him down. He falls to the ground unconscious and is stabbed through the chest by one of your men.

You stand silent and watch as man after man lowers his weapon and drops to his knees, his arms raised high into the air. Your men raise their weapons in victory and cheer. The subdued warriors are quickly disarmed and their armor removed. You keep your word and spare their lives.

Gather the dead! You command the captured men to undertake the grisly task as you look over the battlefield. You flick your sword and send the dead king’s head tumbling to the ground by the hooves of your rearing horse. The majority of the rebellious men are dead or wounded and a handful of your own suffer the same fate. More of your men have fallen than you expected. Bury our men as heroes! Bury the rebels as the peasants they are and throw the dead king’s body to the wolves! You turn and lead your men back to the city, your king’s rule cemented.

Go to Chapter 3 (VICTORIOUS RETURN)

    Chapter 2B (FLANK)

You turn on your horse to your men and order your group of elite soldiers to sneak down the hill through the woods. You put one of your generals in charge of the regular soldiers and tell them not to charge until you send word. You make your way down the hill and through the forest with your other men. You all move quietly on your horses through the dense trees. You and your men wait quietly, about three quarters of the way between your hilltop troops and the enemy. You pull one of your men in close and whisper to him to send orders for the hilltop troops to charge and begin the attack.

A few minutes later you hear the man you left in charge shout and the men, some on horseback and some on foot, barely down the hill shouting and clanging their swords. The enemy reciprocates and begins racing forward. You quietly draw your sword and hold it up. Your men pull theirs and wait for your sword to drop, commanding them to rush into battle. You wait, steady and silent until the enemy is in front of you.

Charge! You lower your arm and point your sword forward as your elite band of warriors run forward.

They race into battle and take the enemy by surprise. You charge forward on your horse and slash left and right with your sword, mowing down the unsuspected enemy. They are stunned to be not only outnumbered, but overtaken on two sides. The enemy struggles to fight back but it is useless. They are dropping left and right to
