    My True Self

    Chapter 1

It was a warm, late spring evening in the small port city of François on the northeastern coast of Hispaniola. The Blue Crab, a shady tavern, was filled with drunken men who spoke in French, English and Spanish as they gambled at the tables that filled the small building. The bar was packed with men who sat elbow to elbow as they downed their drinks. The air smelled of rum, ale and sex. Women, combination prostitute and bar wenches, roamed the establishment with their dresses so short their ass hung out and tops so low their tits were exposed to just above the nipple. To entice customers, the women slid their shirt aside to give the men a peek at their nipples as they delivered the drinks. When a woman secured a customer she either took him upstairs or into the alley. The cheaper men preferred the alley, while the big spenders opted for the upstairs. The Blue Crab was the most popular tavern in the seedy port city filled with criminals and pirates.

At the bar, a man with long black hair pulled back into a pony tail sipped at his rum. His clothes were clean and his beard was a neatly trimmed chinstrap. His body was firm and muscular, his hands large and his smile fetching. His skin was a beautiful bronze and the only break in his physical perfection was a large scar over his left ear that only seemed to add to his allure. His name was the Swingin’ Dutchman and he was a regular, chatting casually with the barkeep who was a portly balding fellow with a scruffy grey beard and only one eye.

Who is that woman? the Swingin’ Dutchman asked as he pointed to a beautiful woman with flowing brown hair and wide hazel eyes who sat at the bend in the bar. Why is a wench sitting at the bar with the men?

The bartender topped off his glass of rum. She be no wench. The barkeep corrected his friend with a shake of a finger. That be the Black Swan.

I’ve heard that name before. Who is she?

She be a beautifully graceful woman who never hesitates to bring a darkness equal to that of the devil to the Spanish Armada – or anyone who dare cross her path whilst looking at her foul.

I find her stunning. A female pirate.

A female pirate yes, but she be tougher than most of the men here. Some say she is equal with you, the great Swingin’ Dutchman.

    Absurd! The Dutchman laughed.

It be true, the barkeep insisted as he took a swig from the bottle of rum. She laid herself in a rowboat off the coast of Cuba, ripped her clothes to expose her wonderfully dangerous body and pretended to be stranded. She drifted for days as her boat floated to the Armada’s prize ship the Royal Prince. The men pulled her aboard, more than happy to help a damsel in distress. The Capitan welcomed her into his quarters and had his way with her until his balls ached empty and he passed out drunk. As he slept, she slit his throat with his own sword and did the same to all of the officers. Come morning, she gave the rest of the crew two options – join her or leave. All but ten joined her, refusing to sail for a woman. She let them live and flee on the boat in which she came with orders to spread the name of the Black Swan.
