Across The Distance - Juliet Cardin

    Chapter 1

Someone must defend the sanctity of marriage, I said. Who better than I?

Dania rolled her eyes, and not for the first time this evening. Ardon, you’re living in the past. Women don’t want to buy what you’re selling. Not anymore. She sat across from me at an intimate table for two. It wasn’t a date. Not really. We were friends—well, actually, friends with benefits.

Not every woman thinks this way, I insisted. There had to be someone out there like me. Someone who wasn’t completely focused on living in the fast lane and furthering their career. Someone who wanted to settle down and raise a family.

Yes, they do. How many women have you dated? Fifty? A hundred? More? Dania’s annoyed expression turned to pity and she let out a sigh. I’m sorry, hun, but that’s just how it is.

Was there no one on Earth who wanted what I did?

The thought plagued me throughout dinner and even after I returned to my apartment. Dania had left the restaurant, programmed her apartment coordinates into the Tiemere Portal, and whisked home without even bothering to ask if I was up for company—the intimate kind of company we intermittently engaged in. I wasn’t in the mood anyway. Not tonight.

What I’d been thinking about required solitude. It was clear that women of the modern world did not want the same thing I did in a relationship. I’d even gone so far as to zip over to a few other planets and test the waters. Problem was, inhabitants were too vastly different in appearance and customs to meet my needs. I wanted a wife. I wanted a family. But how was I to get it?
