About this ebook

A pretty girl in a blue dress came out of the house, and began to walk slowly across the terrace to where Elsa Keith sat with Marvin Rossiter in the shade of the big sycamore. Elsa and Marvin had become engaged some few days before, and were generally to be found at this time sitting together in some shaded spot in the grounds of the Keith's Long Island home.

P. G. Wodehouse

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881-1975) was an English author. Though he was named after his godfather, the author was not a fan of his name and more commonly went by P.G Wodehouse. Known for his comedic work, Wodehouse created reoccurring characters that became a beloved staple of his literature. Though most of his work was set in London, Wodehouse also spent a fair amount of time in the United States. Much of his work was converted into an “American” version, and he wrote a series of Broadway musicals that helped lead to the development of the American musical. P.G Wodehouse’s eclectic and prolific canon of work both in Europe and America developed him to be one of the most widely read humorists of the 20th century.

I like most of this author’s works but this is among the few that barely passes as being “okay”. It felt disjointed in that the first third of the book is set on an island close to France, whereas the remainder of the tale is set in America, which feels like Mr Wodehouse grew tired of the original storyline and opted for a radical change.Another reason why this didn’t appeal is that those last two-thirds of the book are almost identical to events in “Psmith Journalist”, which I’ve read not long before this one, meaning I knew what was coming. There are subtle changes, such as a few different characters. The Psmith from other Wodehouse tales is the same character as the Smith in this one, except Psmith is English and Smith is American. The main reason this didn’t appeal to me is owing to the amount of long-winded narrative and the lack of snappy dialogue that Mr Wodehouse was always a master at. In fact the first chapter features some of his classic witty character exchanges, which made me think that I was in store for another engaging comedy, but the waffling second chapter stated the real narrative pace and tone.A few quality moments here and there persuaded me to rate this novel two stars instead of one.

Did not expect the story to unfold as it did, it was Ok but didn't have quite the same pizzazz as most of his work.

"The Prince and Betty", tells a somewhat more serious story than Wodehouse usually does. Betty is the step-daughter of a ruthless financier called Benjamin Scobell. He decides to open a Casino on the Island of Mervo and in an attempt to improve business,he manages to trace a member of the now defunct Royal family. (the Island at the moment is a Republic) and bring him to the island as a puppet ruler who is to take his orders from Scobell. In an interesting sub-plot we come across one Smith, who seems to be a clone of the much more famous Wodehouse character Psmith .Both address people they meet as Comrade. He is sub-editor of a publication called 'Peaceful Moments' which is described as the sort of paper which the father of the family is expected to take back with him from the office and read aloud to the chicks before bedtime under the shade of the rubber plant. All this will swiftly change however.Although it is not standard P.G. Wodehouse fare,I found it a very enjoyable read and I am sure one which any fan of P.G. would do well to get hold of as they would certainly not be disappointed.
