Chapter One
Peaches hit the gear shifter on her Porsches' Tiptronic transmission, downshifting, and accelerating her two seat convertible to mind blowing speeds. She needed the wind in her hair, she needed to feel the cool crisp air against her face. Dropping the top and hitting the highway was what she did to clear her mind when life started to overwhelm her. So much had transpired in her life of late, and so much had yet to transpire. Her situation with The Commission had been greatly exacerbated by the unexpected arrival of her former boyfriend. Chesarae showing up on her doorstep the previous night had completely thrown her for a loop. And the fact that he was adamant about getting his boys back together and jumping back into the Ohio drug scene, had really complicated things. The love of her life was moving in a direction that would make him an obstacle to the things that she had to do. Her hubby was on a path to becoming her enemy.
Peaches hit the gear shifter once again, sending her Porsche into a higher gear, and then lifted her foot off of the accelerator. She allowed her sports car to slow to a safer 90 miles per hour, and then took the ramp from Interstate 71 onto Interstate 270. It was time to head back toward Dublin. She knew that she could drive as fast as her car would allow, and yet, she still would not be able to outrun her problems. She had to face them. She had to return home and face Chesarae.
The blue tooth connection on her Porsche rang loudly, signaling that she had an incoming call. She hit the answer button on her steering wheel.
Hello?
Hey, what's up?
Who is this?
Peaches asked.
It's Melvin.
"Melvin? she repeated, recoiling slightly.
What the fuck you want?"
I need to holler at you.
About what?
Peaches asked. What kinda words do we have for each other?
I need to square you for that issue.
"What?"
I need to make good on that issue,
Melvin repeated. Say, we need to squash this shit before it gets out of hand. Me and you are better than this. We do good business, and I want to keep it that way.
You gotta be fucking kidding me, right?
Peaches asked laughing. You smoking crack now, Melvin?
Say, Peach, I didn't have nothing to do with that shit,
Melvin told her. That was Kellen with that bullshit.
Naw, that was you too!
Peaches told him. Why didn't you stop that shit?
I stopped them niggas from killing him!
Melvin told her. "Hell, just trying to get them to let him make it was a big enough deal. Hell, they could have killed me!"
Melvin, you are so full of shit!
Man, I got your paper,
Melvin told her.
Peaches thought about telling him to keep it. She didn't trust him. She had did major damage to his car lot, so why he was trying to pay her, was a mystery. Still, she could definitely use the money. She had sent every penny she had to Dante in Texas for a shipment of dope, and she had nothing left. She was living off of her credit cards.
What makes you think that I'm going to trust you?
she asked. You think I'm crazy?
Naw,
Melvin told her. Look, I can bring it to you myself. And I'll bring it any place you want me to, and I'll come alone. I want to squash this bullshit. If it don't make money, then it don't make sense, ya feel me?
I use to think we was on the same page,
Peaches told him. But that was before you pulled this bullshit. Meet me at the storage.
Alright,
Melvin told her. What time?
Peaches peered down at the clock on her navigation/stereo system. I can be there in twenty minutes.
Twenty minutes,
Melvin repeated. All right. Bet.
Bet.
Peaches disconnected the call. She changed lanes, and headed toward Muirfield, where she owned a U Haul Storage franchise. She was going to see what Melvin was talking about. If she could get Melvin out of the picture, then that would take some of the Get Money Boys out of the war, and that would be a big help to her. The fact that Melvin was about to pay her $450,000 thousands for the 30 keys he jacked would be the icing on the cake. The big enchilada, would be to get his ass out of the fight. Slowly, a smile began to spread across her face. Her odds of survival had just crept up from none, to a little bit. And she would take that any day of the week.
*****
Peaches pulled up to her storage facility. It was a modern, U Haul, air conditioned, self storage facility. It not only leased storage space, but also U Haul trucks. It also sold packaging supplies such as boxes, packing tape, locks, ropes, bubble wrap, and everything that a person would need to move or store their belongings. The franchise had been one of her best investments. She used it to wash her dope money, to employ her soldiers, and even as short term storage for her drugs. Her storage franchise had been a gold mine.
Your guest is already here,
the store manager told her, as she climbed out of her Porche. He's waiting inside of my office.
Thanks, Rico,
Peaches told him. He alone?
Rico nodded.
Be careful,
Peaches said, peering around the area. Have the guys break out the assault rifles and get ready just in case. I don't trust his ass. He might have some boys around just waiting for me to arrive.
I called in some extra muscle,
Rico told her. I got twenty guys here already.
Good,
Peaches nodded. She headed for the office.
Melvin was seated in front of the desk when she walked in. He had the black Nike duffel bag that the dope had been in, sitting on the floor next to him.
What's up, Peach?
Melvin said, nodding.
Peaches walked around the desk and took a seat. What's up?
Melvin leaned down and grabbed the Nike bag. He lifted it and set it on the desk. Four hundred and fifty stacks.
Peaches rose, unzipped the gym bag, and peered inside. Bundles of cash were inside. She lifted several stacks and flipped through them. All hundreds.
It's all there,
Melvin told her.
Why the fuck did we have to go through all a this?
Peaches asked.
They was all already tripping when I got outside,
Melvin told her. I tried to break that shit up, but it had already gone too far.
Why you didn't call me right away?
Peaches asked.
I really didn't know what to do,
Melvin told her. "Shit, I was heated at them
