Haiti Quake 2010 Chronicle of a Year of Crisis: Requiem or Kairos
()
About this ebook
THE JANUARY 12, 2010 EVENT that happened in our midst triggered a series of crises—emotional, mental, psychological, politic and social—that require the survivors to go through a period of mental and spiritual rehabilitation before meaningful participation in the reconstruction of Haiti can occur. Being placed under the supervision of the United Nations (UN) the “superpowers,” Haiti and the team that awkwardly manages the mega crises have their eyes and mind turned to foreign donors to come rebuild the first black republic. The authorities in charge do not see eye to eye with the non-governmental organizations (NGOs). They think that there is not enough government control on the amount of foreign aid that comes to the country. On the other hand, foreign donors do not trust local authorities and are not ready to pour the billions promised for recovery into the hands of the current government in order to start helping the victims of the January 12th earthquake. Donors make all kinds of requirements before they can start delivering, drop by drop, that huge amount.
This major disaster was preceded and followed by others. The earthquake, however, was the straw that broke the camel’s back. It seems to end a piece of history and to announce a new era. This event, a way of leading us into despair, a requiem or the confirmed death of the first black republic, is leading us instead to kairos. It is, I suggest, an opportunity for the people of God in Haiti to start a new life, a new beginning for us survivors of January 12th. It is at last an occasion for God’s agents in Haiti to work for the rebirth of the nation and prepare a bright future for the Haitian people. We arrived at the point of choosing serious leaders to have good governance and good management of the republic. It is an occasion for the Haitian church, the Haitian Corpus Christi to fulfill its prophetic role in the new Haitian society.
