    Silent.

The world had turned silent again after the storm. Wind had died down and not even tree branches creaked under the weight of snow. The white world felt like having died from the cold and gone on to the white void of death, although the clouds of my breath was proof I was still alive.

I slung my bow to my back and decide to try my luck at the stream cutting through the forest a little away from my cabin. I had eaten almost everything in my storage during the many days that the storm raged so I had little choice but to take this opportunity to hunt. Going outside during those stormy days was no option since I would get lost three steps out the door.

At the stream I might just find some wild boars with any luck. These creatures didn't migrate away during winter, eating the hard grass and thin twigs buried under the snow, meaning they were a nearby supply of meat. As long as they kept close enough to my cabin and hadn't moved somewhere else anyway.

Up to my knees in snow, the crunching sound of every step echoed around me and betrayed my presence in the forest. I just hoped any prey I found would ignore me long enough for me to to sneak up on it and kill it. If I couldn't catch something today I might starve when another storm came down soon. I did get my share of luck though and heard the grunt of a boar at the same time I heard the stream.

My heart beat faster at the prospect of filling my stomach if I was able shoot it. I halted, took my bow slowly and loading an arrow. With careful, slow steps I moved forward, sliding, more than stepping through the snow. I felt rather proud of how silent I could move. I went into the direction of the sound, keeping an eye out for the animal. If I scared it, it would take too long to find another target.

From the sound of it, it seemed busy with eating a bush and the rustle and crunches of twigs hopefully covered any accidental sounds I made. Tension filled my body as I pulled my arrow, cursing inwardly at the creak of the wooden bow bending. Through the trees up ahead I saw it look up and I froze. When it continued eating I let out my breath. Safe so far.

Sliding further through the snow I got a better view of it. It was a big light and dark brown boar. It would give me some trouble taking it back to my cabin, but would provide enough meat to keep me going for a while. I wanted to shoot it badly, but I needed a better position to pierce its chest and kill it in one shot. If I botched it up and only wounded it, it might get away far and fast enough for me to lose it.

I moved sideways, keeping myself hidden by the trees until I had a clearer shot. Aiming my arrow I pulled it back harder, giving it more power to kill its target.

    I held my breath.

The boar looked up again, then bolted before I could release my arrow.

'Son of a..' I let go through my clenched teeth. Something must have startled it.

I went to the stream hoping to see the boar still nearby or a trail showing where it went. Seeing it move slowly further down the stream sent a wave of relief through me. I still had some luck left.

The sound of the stream would mask my footsteps more and I followed it. I might just get another shot at it.

It was at the edge of
