Negative gearing has been a buzz word in Australia for many years, but very few people really understand how it works. The aim of this book is to explain the relevant concepts to assist the everyday user in assessing their own situation before leaping into negative gearing. The book starts with the basic concepts and then moves on to worked example for illustrative purposes. For those already using this investment strategy, it aims to simplify the concept and point out other considerations.
Muriel Oliver
Muriel has over thirty years’ experience in Accounting, Taxation and Client advisory including over twenty years’ experience in Australia, initially working for Arthur Andersen and is currently a Director of Primarius Financial Solutions, based in Perth.Prior to this she worked in South Africa, Botswana and Hong Kong, having sold her first firm to KPMG in 1989. Muriel's experience covers a wide range of industries, with extensive experience in the accounting profession as well as having worked in commerce as well.Muriel enjoys using her experience and knowledge to find solutions for clients that meet their needs and add value not only to their business, but also to their overall personal financial position.Over the years she has been searching for ways to simplify concepts for clients and to that end has started writing books on various subjects in an attempt to demystify many of the key concepts.She is currently working on a Doctorate of Business Administration focusing on Business Models, Strategy and the family Business.Muriel is a strong advocate of quality systems and procedures to create and maintain sustainable businesses.She is a wife, mother and grandmother and enjoys travelling and playing golf with her husband and spending time with her family.

Introduction
Over the years, so many people have asked me where they can read up on every day financial topics, in order to obtain a deeper understanding of their own situation and make more informed decisions.
Unfortunately, up until now, I have only ever found highly technical reading matter suitable for tax accountants or lawyers. This book aims to provide the reader with a broad overview. The aim of this series of mini-books is to give those everyday users seeking more practical information, the necessary knowledge to understand the basics, and understand how this applies to their own situation.
For this reason, this is not (nor is it intended to be), a definitive book on the topic, as there is an abundance of legally incorrect information out there. Our aim is to describe the idea to an everyday user, whether a business person or investor and to assist them in understanding the concept and deciding whether or not it is suitable for them.
We often hear second or third hand horror stories about the problems people have experienced with their investment structure; it is almost always the case that either they did not understand the concept fully, or that poor housekeeping was employed.
