About this ebook

Your daily amount of mystery and suspense, 1000 words length. It's detective stories showtime.

The third book of the Chase Williams flash fiction series features more short detective stories with mystery and suspense included.
The winning formula doesn't change as each story is 1000 words in length and each of them adds another dark piece in the (apparently) quiet Tursenia puzzle.

Central Italy has not only nice food, Etruscan town walls and breath-taking art: crimes and mysteries happen in the background among the maze of alleys of the historical city centre.
Crime is harder to nail when the culprit could be anyone, from the least suspicious town-dweller to your old grumpy neighbour. These ten short detective stories are a genuine window to contemporary Italy, where it doesn't matter what happens, the important thing is not to be caught.

**You haven't read Vol.1 and Vol.2 yet? Don't worry.**
The Chase Williams detective short stories books feature one-shot stories that can be read separately. You don't need to have read the whole flash fiction collection to enjoy this volume.

    Rage Against the Police

Chase could smell the excitement and feel the rush of a crime scene. The closer he came to it, the more he could sense the anxiety of the forensics team, taking photos and collecting evidence. All the lights in the shop windows of the popular mall in Ponte Barciano had been turned off. The spotlights were all on a police car instead.

God, I don’t think I can handle this, Matteo Cangi’s trembling voice greeted Chase.

You’re stronger than you think, mate.

I don’t think so. It’s too much for me. I hate it when I recognise the face of a victim.

Cangi turned his head towards the mall, avoiding any more eye contact than necessary with the crime scene. Chase accompanied him for a few steps in the opposite direction.

Take some deep breaths and hang in there. Can you brief me or should I call Angelo out?

No, I need to do this, Cangi sighed. I can’t allow myself to fall apart this way.

    I’m all ears, then.

Fernando Ritrosi and Giacomo Mazzagli, colleagues of ours on patrol, are both dead. Cangi hesitated. Fernando died due to a shot to the abdomen, while Giacomo was hit twice in his chest before the killer shot him in the head.

Like the assassin had some deep-seated rage against him, Angelo interjected.

Chase was startled as the Inspector appeared out of nowhere. The scene was so full of police officers that Chase hadn’t noticed his best friend approaching.

Did the killer take anything from them? Chase questioned.

Angelo craned his neck towards the police car, as though to double check. Nothing.

They didn’t even react, said Cangi in a whisper. Their weapons are still holstered. He squeezed his eyes, then looked down. Chase knew how difficult it was to assess a crime scene where your own colleagues were involved.

    Maybe they knew their executioner.

Angelo and Cangi turned to Chase at the same time.

What? Chase shrugged. It looks like an execution to me. Doesn’t it to you?

Have your team found any fingerprints? Angelo questioned Cangi, ignoring Chase.

None. Fernando must’ve wound down the window and the killer fired at them without touching anything, most probably from close proximity.

    Any witnesses? Chase urged.

Angelo pointed out a bunch of police cars parked close to them.

A prostitute who works in the area. She called us; she’s scared to death.

The ebony skin of the girl seemed to have blue reflections that night. She was telling a police woman that she’d heard some gunshots whilst she was getting ready for work.

The three men approached the couple in silence, not wanting to interrupt the girl.
