This pulp novel draws heavily from Batman-esque detective stories where much of the plot involves fighting, and the actual deductions feel more like serendipity than clever-thinking. Perhaps the earlier books in the series explained the setting more, but the 1920s/30s setting felt smashed together with Bladerunner technology and pseudo-mysticism involving ancient Egypt, and ended up feeling more hidge-podgey than cool. Characters felt like caricatures--playboy noir superhero, jaded police detective, menacing mob boss, smooth Frenchman, etc. But the action sequences are well written, and it's a quick read.
