I dedicate this book to my mother, Mattie Johnson Lee, my sister, Joyce Elizabeth Neaves, and my play mama’s, Thelma, Sweet Adeline, Elary, Lilly, Isabelle, Bea, and Peggy.

My she-roes who taught me how to live, love, laugh, and survive. From them I learned that goodness and righteousness has its own reward, that faith, hope, and hard work are prerequisites for success, and that class and good taste are not defined by economic status.

But the most important thing they taught me is that you can give in, and you can give out, but you can never give up!

Preface

At the age of 9, I had began to question many of the prevailing truths in regard to religion and history. At age 14, I read books about world religions and psychology for answers to my questions regarding human behavior and God..

My search left me with more questions than answers. However, one thing was certain, I would never give up my search for the truth.

My quest for enlightenment began in earnest when I was 24 years of age. I invited an old friend and former co-worker, who I had not seen for several years, to my apartment. She was 14 years older, and I had always admired her boundless energy, positive personality, and natural grace. Her love of opera and her desire to become a opera singer had not diminished over the years. She brought me a book called Believe That You Have It by Alta Turk Everett.

That night, as I flipped through the pages, my eyes fell upon these words, thoughts are things. Those three words and that book started my life long quest for self-enlightenment and self-mastery. I read books by the original pioneers of positive thought,
