Chapter 1:
The Ride of Your Life
Chloe was doing her best to be brave. I can do it, Mom. I can do it!
she insisted.
Our daughter was only eleven, yet she was facing a tense situation.
As a mother, I knew she wasn’t ready for this—and I wanted to stop her. At the same time the Spirit of God was saying, Don’t you dare! It will help her grow up.
That morning, as we were driving to the big event, Chloe decided to sit in the third seat of our family car—way in the back. On the second seat were her sisters, Jordan and Olivia.
We had been driving only a few minutes when suddenly Chloe screamed, Stop the car! Stop the car! I’m going to throw up!
There were no windows in the back of our car, so she jumped forward to the middle seat. Seconds later, Olivia realized what was about to happen. Anxious to get out of the way, she quickly jumped on Jordan’s lap and sat on her sister’s breakfast. Olivia had a cheese sandwich smashed on her backside. And the rest of it was smeared on Jordan’s front side.
Immediately, I pressed the button to roll down the window and shouted, Chloe, just lean over and throw up outside!
So what does Chloe do in her distress? She turns to throw up directly in Jordan and Olivia’s laps.
Instinctively, thank God, Olivia grabbed her, stuffed her head out the window, and Chloe continued heaving out the car window for the next several blocks.
Running Like Jackrabbits
When we arrived at our destination, I tried to be dignified, calmly asking, Can you please tell me where the nearest restroom is located?
By my side was Chloe, screaming, Bathroom! Bathroom!
Someone pointed in the right direction, and we ran like jackrabbits.
Mom, get me a trash can,
Chloe begged, as she found a place to sit. Of course, the container was attached to the wall, so I ripped the plastic garbage bag out of the bin and rushed it over to my nauseated daughter.
When her vomiting finally subsided, I took some water from the sink and rubbed it over my little girl’s face. Putting both arms around her, I gave up and said, Let’s just go home now.
To my shock, and really in rebuke, Chloe pulled away from me, squared her shoulders back, and stood up. She wiped her face and with great determination said, I’m ready. Let’s go do this!
A Guarantee
Chloe taught me an important lesson that day. As you will discover in this book, the issue is not avoiding stress—we all experience tension that can tie our stomachs in knots. It is how we react under pressure that builds our character, strengthens our moral fiber, and develops our inner strength.
I truly believe that if you’re breathing, stress will find you. It’s almost a guarantee. However, there comes a time in life when you must decide to step to the next level.
Will it be easy? Heavens no.
Will you react? Or will you respond?
That’s up to you.
• When you react, stress controls you.
• When you respond with the Word of God, you take control over stress.
It really is up to you. God has already done His part. The question now is, Are you ready to do yours?
A Horse Named Wisdom
Chloe’s response to stress should not have surprised me because this certainly was not the first time she’d experienced the opportunity to put stresses to the test. I can still remember seeing my little daughter at the age of seven entering her very first horse riding competition. All of our girls have taken riding lessons, and Chloe longed for the chance to enter her first competition.
The horse she was riding was an Arabian that was about thirty years old and really ready for retirement. This was a tired, worn-out horse, and she was only going to walk and trot him around the arena.
But this wasn’t just any horse—this horse was Wisdom. As a concerned mom with a little girl onboard a big horse, I felt a great deal of confidence that my baby would be gently trotting around the arena on Wisdom. I mean, he couldn’t be named Wisdom for no reason, right? Wrong.
A Strong-Willed Horse
As proud parents, we were in the stands watching little Chloe enter the arena on her mount.
When Wisdom reached the center of the arena with the other horses, he suddenly realized he was an Arabian and wanted to prove it. It was as if Wisdom regained his youth—he began cantering like a crazy horse. Wisdom, nothing.
If you have ever ridden an Arabian, you know that they are extremely strong-willed and often difficult to handle. So there we were, unable to help our little girl, watching Wisdom as he took off like a rocket with Chloe bouncing to high heaven. He was as excited as popcorn kernels on a hot stove, colliding into the other horses and frightening everyone in sight.
Whoa! Whoa!
Richard and I jumped to our feet, and I was praying, Oh Jesus, please help my baby not to fall.
We were terrified beyond words.
Chloe was screaming at the top of her lungs, Whoa! Whoa! Stop! Stop!
Wisdom completely ignored her. After showing off, he headed straight for one of the exits and ran out of the arena.
Richard and I quickly followed Chloe outside and could see she had burst into tears. Our daughter was tough, but this was too much. Someone yelled, Why didn’t you control your horse?
There was no applause. There would be no ribbon. There was nothing but tears.
As she stood next to Wisdom, my heart was breaking. I thought, My poor
