Description
The Makarov PM (Pistolet Makarova), pronounced muh-KAR-uhv
, Russian: 17ucmonem MaKapoea 17M is a semi-automatic pistol designed in the late 1940s by Russian firearms designer Nikolai Fyodorovich Makarov. For many years it was the Soviet Union's standard military sidearm.
The Makarov PM is a blowback operated, double action pistol of all-steel construction. The manual safety is located on the left side of the slide, and when engaged, safely brings the hammer down from the cocked position, and then locks the hammer, sear, and slide. The external hammer can be cocked manually for the accurate first shot in single-action mode, or can be cocked automatically by the longer and heavier trigger pull in double-action mode. An all-steel magazine holds eight rounds, and when the last shot is fired, the slide remains in the open position, by to the slide stop. To disengage the slide stop, one must pull the lever on the left side of the frame down. The magazine catch is located at the bottom of the grip. The PM is fitted with fixed open sights as a standard, with click-adjustable open sights available as an option on export models.
The characteristics of the Soviet Makarov pistol:

Background
The Makarov was the result of a competition held to design a replacement for the aging Tokarev TT-33 semi-automatic pistol. The TT had been loosely derived from the popular M1911 and was, by 1945, felt to be too large, heavy, and unreliable for a general service pistol. Rather than building his gun around an existing cartridge, Nikolai Makarov designed a new round, the 9 x 18mm PM, based on the
