Chapter One

UP, UP AND AWAY

I thought of entitling this little work, Adventure of a Lifetime, but I hope to live long enough to replicate it or at least experience the like of it again.

In anticipation of receiving the pittance for which I had sold my business, I resolved to plan an overseas trip, as a retirement present for myself. I booked it all myself online, on Trip Advisor which partners with Agoda, Booking.com, Expedia, Wotif etc……..a feat which I had never before attempted, but which miraculously came off without a hitch.

Why Ukraine and Russia, you may well ask?

Well, I had always wanted to visit the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. I learnt that a business colleague with another associate had planned a trip which took in the Hermitage, so I enquired if I could tag along. That didn’t eventuate, but I resolved to go in any event. As it turned out, I was in St Petersburg and visiting the Hermitage on the very day that The Hermitage Exhibition [Masterpieces from the Hermitage:The Legacy of Catherine the Great] opened in Australia at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, my hometown…my new definition of Irony….still, the 400 or 500 items brought out to Melbourne would scarcely have been missed by the Hermitage which boasts about 3 million exhibits.

But why Ukraine too, I hear you ask?

One reason I am happy to say is that I read online about an American author who wrote that of all European countries Ukraine probably has the most interesting history. And I was interested to learn more of the so-called war currently being fought in Ukraine (and perhaps more concerning the shooting down of Malaysian Airlines MH17). To abide by the advice or warnings of DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade – the Australian Government) I did not plan to go to Crimea (annexed by Russia on the orders of Russian
