World on My Shoulders - Joylynn M. Jossel
Mountain Top
I want my husband and I to take our little black sons high upon a mountaintop. I want for it to be just us. That way I know our sons will be safe.
Our sons will be safe from drugs, money, prejudice, gangs, inequality, violence and injustice. For it is not beast and demons that lurk in my nightmares to interrupt my sleep, but it is these things.
I am so afraid. I’m even too afraid to confide in my husband of this fear. I don’t want him to feel that I doubt his ability to protect his family. I equally fear for him.
Each day they walk out the door onto land that their people built but is not theirs. They are merely stepchildren. Therefore, the Will read upon the death of the forefathers did not equally distribute this land.
I don’t want our sons to become black men. I want them to stay little boys safely tucked against my buss.
I’m clutching them so tightly that they can hardly move. I’m not letting go either. As tears fall from my eyes into theirs, their little faces are staring up at me with such confusion. I think, My God! If only my poor little black sons knew.
When their father stands over us and shields us with the strength of his arms, that’s when we’re on the mountaintop. When his tears soak my hair, I then know that he too has the same nightmares.

I was in shock by what I saw on the way to one of my
