    Qualifications & Premise

In order to write a book on how to be a successful college student, I must clarify that the reader knows that the people involved in the making of this are qualified to speak on this subject. At the time this was written, each current and former student is highly accomplished, intelligent students. From multiple appearances on the dean’s list to being members of well-established school organizations such as The National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), Golden Key International Honor Society, and Beta Gamma Sigma, each student that I spoke to gave great advice for the incoming freshman and for those who want to improve while they are in school.

The premise for this is book is to give the advice that has helped me and other students have a great college experience. There not as many opportunities where successful students get to pass on advice to incoming students at one time, for some are very busy people. That reason being is why this book was written. Each of these principles were instrumental in the success of the students and I hope that I can speak for everyone that was involved in this book by saying that we hope these work for you and you succeed in all of your endeavors.

    Principle 1.

    Time Harmony: Harmonize Your Time

...learn how to manage time between school, work, and your social life. It will be less stressful on you.

Brandy Cole, George Mason University ‘15

Time management is the first and most important principle. Every student, current and former, which I have spoken to, seems to have time management on the top of their lists of wisdom that they give to incoming students. I am sure before you step foot on a college campus, someone has already told you how important time management is. Well, they are correct. Time is the most important resource, and the scarcest. There will be many things going on around you that will garner your attention; classwork, tests, quizzes, organizational meetings, extracurricular activities; and those are just school related, I have not even gotten to social life and your overall health. With all of this occurring, how are you going to keep everything in balanced, and do well at each?

Balance is key, but I prefer to use a different term; harmony. That classic saying of having a work-life balance is the way to go comes off as a tradeoff. You can never balance it all because one thing will hinder the other in some fashion. For instance, if you are in too many clubs and making appearances at events, it could potentially affect your energy to study and get some rest. I have known people who had to give up certain extracurricular activities due to it hindering their schoolwork and their energy levels. The best way to keep everything you are doing in school is not to have balance, but harmony. I have a special method for this called Time Harmony.

    Everything in Time Harmony

One of the definitions of harmony is a pleasing or congruent arrangement of parts, meaning that all of the parts are working together that is pleasing for all parties. Time harmony is the same way there are many different parts of your college career that you have to dedicate time to: social life, school work, school organizations, and a job if you have one, and your health. With all of these parts, it is tough to balance it all and at some point, you will be burned-out at some point. Balance indicates that each part is separate, meaning that each is not always working together. One will eventually be heavier than the other, causing an unbalance, and possible dysfunction.

Take a scale for instance. If you place a coffee mug on one side and a plastic cup on the other, it will not be balanced. Your time in school is no different.
