About this ebook

A step into a different direction from the first Dragonflies series, Nicholas Brown puts into poetry and anecdotal prose poems how he felt at some of his worst emotional moments.

People will be shocked, others will enjoy, but all shall respect the brutal honesty within this work, especially the poem No Love.

Not many people open up when they're feeling some type of way. In Dragonflies at War Vol. II, you're guaranteed to receive exactly what was on his mind.

    When the Beef is on

"What's beef?  Beef is when you need two gats to go to sleep,

Beef is when your moms ain't safe up in the streets

Beef is when I see you...Guaranteed to be in ICU" - Notorious B.I.G¹

Yeah nigga, watch who you beef with – Canibus²

In life, you never want to piss people off and make enemies. You tread as lightly as possible, but you can’t escape what’s coming when you live a certain lifestyle. People beef over the littlest things but often times it can be deadly.

Have you ever been in a situation like this?

You’re at a bar or pool hall, dance or strip club with your friends when you look up and see someone who doesn’t like you. The last time you saw one another, you embarrassed this person by serving them an ass whooping. They noticed you as well.

Now you’re thinking damn, what this nigga gone do? The place you’re at is packed with people moving to loud music, but you hear only silence. If you’re scared: your heart rate quickens, nervousness overtakes your body with the sense of fleeing dominating your need of a good time. But if you’re thoughts are: if I’m gonna die today, so be it, then keep an eye on your enemy, seeing if they’re going back to their car. If you have gun, keep it off safety just in case. If they return, but nothing occurs then keep your distance until they leave first.

In 2005, when I chilled in strip clubs all the time, I was at this pool hall named Wesley’s one Friday night. I got into a stare down with a guy I roughed up in high school. I was with four friends—the other guy was with about twelve. One of my boys had his gun in the car. I noticed that five guys he was with had facial tattoos, advertising their homicidal reputations—the types of men who made people uneasy when they entered a club.

That moment when I looked at him, and he at me, arrived as they walked onto the other side. He didn’t give me a mean mug or scowls. I didn’t give any eaces or nasty looks either. I nodded my head that signaled what’s up. He nodded back nothing much just chilling. We went on about our night. What occurred between us was left in the past. I’m glad because it easily could’ve escalated.

A respected guy, B.G., from my old Carol City neighborhood came across fools he beefed with in high school. It was four guys, all of them brothers, and they encountered each other at the strip club around the way. B.G. knocked two of the largest brother’s front teeth out with one punch. This started a brawl. Security of the club messed up by pushing all parties outside
