    The Lakota Grandmother’s Legend

    This story is told by the Grandmother Spirit who was wizened by time and who passed this Legend down through generations.

    In the Beginning there was the Essence, and the Essence was before words and deeds. It lived within the Ethereal Worlds and was warm and kind and wondrously loving. Then it grew past its very own edges, and burst like a bubble spilling Enchanted Dust throughout the Galaxies.

    And the Essence became the Sun, the Moon, the Stars and the Planets shining in the Heavens above. Within the vast Oceans of the Earth, Volcanic Mountains rose from the depths of the Sea to meet with the Guardians of the Sky. Then the Twin Creator initiated all of life to flourish instilling the receptivity and softness of the Wiya and the strength and munificence of the Wicasa.

    This Gift of Love was woven amidst the tapestry of all thought and action within the Cosmos. Then upon the Body of the Earth, Thirteen Tribes were scattered like leaves by the Goddess Wóhpe. Each Clan was uniquely different in appearance from goliath height to diminutive stature, with different colors of skin, hair, eyes and diverse facial features. They could speak in all tongues and interpret the language of Elementals and Creatures through Soulful Empathy. They utilized the Power of the Hanbleciya.

    During the changing of the seasons they celebrated their Medicine Ways at Tribal Council, sharing their Honored Traditions with each other through Music, Dance, Ceremony and Storytelling. They designed intricate
