    Chapter One

No fanfare greeted King Arthur and the forces of Avalon. No floodlights lit their way. Bedivere had counseled his king to exit in silence, under cover of night. After all, what Morgana didn’t know would surely work to their advantage. Many knights objected to this advice, for they believed Arthur should roar out of Avalon like the Dragon of England. To slink out, as they put it, like thieves in the night, was unsavory. Some even said cowardly. But Arthur trusted his oldest friend’s wisdom, and thus did as he suggested.

Bedivere stood with Arthur among the night-shadowed, silent host of soldiers on the dim field before Stirling Castle. The overcast sky cloaked their movements, and even though they traversed friendly territory, Bedivere was of the opinion they couldn’t be too careful. Morgana was wily, and her spies could often see things from afar.

Arthur nodded toward the south, where the lights of the city shone. Stirling.

Yes, sire, Bedivere answered. You’ll meet Colonel Darrow there. All’s been arranged.

Arthur shot a sidelong glance at his friend and smiled. And you, then? Off to the north at once?

You’ve given me my orders, sire, Bedivere said. No reason to delay.

Arthur shifted his gaze back to the city. Very well. God go with you, Sir Bedivere, and give my regards to the Lady of the Lake. Thank her for her service.

Bedivere nodded and gave his king a soldierly salute. He pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and tapped it with his finger. Remember, my liege, only devices that have been specially calibrated to work in Scotland may be used to contact me. Darrow's had his people cut all land lines, in order to prevent spying and unlawful communication. He pointed up to the night sky. Everything goes through a special satellite, which the Jocks control.

Arthur shook his head and laughed. Bedivere, my old friend. He clapped him on the shoulder. This is why you're my chiefest counselor. You've kept yourself apprised of these things, but what you've just said is Greek to me. But don't worry, worthy Sir Bedivere. I'll catch up after I've won this war.

Bedivere walked off, and as he strode across the field, he looked down at himself. He didn’t look much like Sir Anything at that moment. Not only had he been divested of his sword, he didn’t even wear the fae-spun garments he’d grown so accustomed to over his years in
