About this ebook

Just like you can't judge a book by its cover, you shouldn't judge a librarian on the choice of her bike.

Jack is a university librarian with a penchant for sleek racing bikes. When she says she's from Birmingham, you can be sure she doesn't mean Alabama.

Trash is a blue-blooded American, his charter's lawyer, and their information gatherer. That Jack thinks he's a bit of alright is of no consequence, because with an ocean between them, and such differences in interests and backgrounds, it would never work.

Would it?

Until a rival MC declares war, and everything changes.

Could it?

What the Devil Wants - Clare Power

    Dedicated to the memory of

    William E. Twardokus

    July 25, 1940 – August 14, 2014

    The real Backfire

Backfire allowed me to use his road name when I was writing Devil Seeker. I am sorry that he never got to see the finished book, but I am proud beyond words that he liked the blurb that was written and enjoyed the parts that were written before his sad passing.

I am honoured that he allowed his road name to be used for that book, and that his widow feels that he would have been happy for this practice to continue.

I pray that he Rides Free, Always.

    The Cycle Devils MC Series

    Spelling and words

Hi Folks – I have written this book mainly from two people’s points of view – Jack’s and Trash’s. Jack is English and Trash is American. This being the case you will notice some spelling differences I have deliberately put in to emphasise this...

Jack will spell words like this, colour and flavour, whilst Trash will spell them like this, color and flavor.

Also, some words have different meanings in the two cultures:

    Panties are knickers.

Pants in English are generally old-fashioned full briefs, i.e. granny knickers/pants.

Pants in America are trousers in England.

    Jeans are jeans wherever.

Birmingham is the second largest city in England, commonly called Brum. Someone from that area is often known as a Brummie. They may well have a distinct local accent.

A scooter in the UK and in a bike show is a Vespa or Lambretta, a type of small motorcycle more associated with Mods than bikers. I know in the USA it can mean a more powerful motorcycle but it is not the same thing at all.

A rat bike in the UK can be any make or model, but is generally painted matt black, with no visible silver metal or chrome, probably in a distressed visual state (ripped seat covers, etc.) but this does not necessarily affect the bike’s performance. In the US it means it has a lot of bags hanging off it, but this is not necessarily the case in the UK.

If I use slang terms, either English or American, I will try to explain them in the text of the book.

I hope this makes sense and adds to your enjoyment of the book.

    Epilogue from Devil Seeker

    Backfire

It’s club night and Ace starts to tell us about a new club plan, The Cycle Devils are going to patch over an English club, he says. Because our chapter has links to England, we have been asked to send members over to meet the UK club. Meeting Kat and Jack has taught us that there are a load of differences between our cultures, so we wondered if Backfire and Trash would like to go over there as part of our party with their old ladies as unofficial translators, all expenses on the club.

Trash grins at Ace, That sounds amazing. I’ll go, and Jack has shit to sort over there anyhow.

    Backfire? Ace asks.

We’re getting a bike ready to show at Daytona. I’ll obviously go where the club wants, but I don’t know if Kat can come. She has to get it painted.

Shit, Ace says, We need to find out how to make the timelines work. I’ll find out a timetable, you sort one out too, Backfire. We need to make this work to get Kat out of the picture in case the Dead or the consortium make a move on her.

It’ll be an epic honeymoon if we can manage it.

    England here we come.

    What the Devil Wants

    Jack’s Prologue bit

This girl just wants to have fun and I have loads of ideas of ways to enjoy life. Now it may seem strange to some that I am a librarian, but a job like this, surrounded by books, what's not to love? On the other hand I am also a bit of a speed freak, there is nothing I like more than to ride my bikes fast, or ride a horse around a cross country course.

I’m on holiday in Florida as my sister Kat just got married, and her man is in a motorcycle club, which is positively overflowing with handsome single men. What a disaster.

I’ve hit it off with one of them, it’s potentially a bit complicated as his life and work are here and mine are in England. What on earth do I do? Give up my job and move to America to be with a man I hardly know? Persuade him to move with me?

It must be admitted that I am taken with Trash and his smartarse ways. We seem to spark off each other. If I met him in England there would be no issue. Actually that’s a lie, there would be an issue. He is a totally different sort of biker to me, he’s in an MC and likes the Harley, custom scene, I like the superbike racing scene.

The thing about Trash is that although I’ve only seen him in his club clothes I can easily imagine him in a Savile Row suit because although he’s a biker he has the air of a ruthless businessman, mind you he is a lawyer so it’s understandable. He hides his obvious sophistication to fit in with his brothers but I can see it’s there.

Where do I go from here?

    Trash's prologue bit

A lot of women who hang round the club think I am the safe bet, the soft option compared to some of my harder brothers. Although I’m not the only brother with a college education, I am the only one that occasionally wears a suit to work and doesn’t work with his hands. I may not swear as much as some, I don’t feel the need. As a result, my role in the club is seen as less violent and dominant than most of my brothers. Some make the mistake of seeing me as weak. They should realise that no-one becomes a member of an MC if his brothers see him as weak. From the outside I look like the club’s lawyer, and indeed I am, but I am also the club’s information gatherer. Torturer sounds so old fashioned.

I really don’t like the sluts that are attracted to members of an MC. They don’t want me, just patch on my back and I have no respect for them, they are a waste of my energy. They all seem to be stupid, they rely on their looks instead of their brain to attract me so I usually look for, ah, entertainment outside the club.

I'm into Jack, she’s beautiful, tall, a blaze of energy wrapped up in a classy exterior. Her mahogany hair is well cut into an apparently effortless, expensive style, I know the signs. She  has a natural look. Her perfume is also pure class, she wears Penhaligon’s. Her style leans towards sleek designer dresses that show off her figure. She isn’t all tits and ass like most of my brothers like, she’s far more elegant. The wedding proved that while Jack can behave like a lady when needed at the wedding itself, she can let her hair down completely, playing bite the wienie with me.

Everything I know about her already means she will be mine, I’m just giving it a little time to be sure. If things keep going the way they’re going I think one girl’s life is going to change.

    Chapter 1

    Presents

    Jack

It’s been days since Backfire and Kat got married.

We’re on our own sitting round my sister Kat's living room looking at her wedding presents.

It's no good, she moans in frustration. I'm never going to nail him down to open all these with me so will you help? You know you want to.

She's right of course. What girl doesn't like opening brightly wrapped parcels? I grin and grab a pen and paper whilst Kat grabs a bin liner and a box of gift envelopes.

She starts opening the envelopes, dividing cheques into who the payee is, Backfire, herself or both of them, with a separate pile for cash. I note down who the gift is from and how much the amount is. While she’s opening up, I quickly nab a few small clear food bags from the kitchen and stuff the separate piles into different bags so that nothing gets misplaced.

When we get through the obvious money gifts we look at the pile of pretty parcels and grin.

It's got to be done, Kat says.

Go for it lady, I encourage.

Kat giggles as she starts on the parcels, I go back to my list.

They have some pretty amazing stuff from Harley shops, and some horse stuff from his family, we seriously love this western riding gear.

I have got to go to a tack shop here, I sigh.

Kat looks up from her pile. We’ll go riding, there is an awesome horsey area about ten minutes drive away.

    Cool, can’t wait.

Then Kat asks the burning question, what’s happening between you and Trash?

If only I knew. I like him, I have a lot of fun with him, but I know there’s a lot more to him than that. I think he is a temptation, maybe a short time fun friendship, beyond that I don’t know. I like home, I like my job, but I do like the heat here, I thought Florida was just geared to theme parks and tourists, I was wrong. I think I could easily live here.

    Trash

Backfire and I sit down at a table outside the clubhouse. Ace has just told us that we're going to England and taking Kat and Jack.

Fuckin’ love the idea of giving Kat a honeymoon, especially when it takes her away from the Nightmare Dead. I didn’t think we could find the time.

I love the idea of going over with Jack and seeing her life. I like the girl, but there are a hell of a lot of differences between us. I am interested in working out how much, because at the moment I see her as mine, I’m just making sure before I claim her.

The moment I saw her I knew she would attract you, her class shines through and that’s always been what fuckin’ interests you, Backfire laughs.

What can I say? I know what I want, I smirk.

It works for me too, Kat would like to have her sister around I’m sure.

    And as easy as that
