Linda Winstead Winstead Jones

The first clue Linda had that she might like to write for a living came when she took a community education class in creative writing at the local high school. Taking classes was her hobby at the time, and creative writing came between yoga and French, or maybe between cake decorating and Chinese cooking. It was her first experience of meeting and working with other writers. She had always loved to read, and soon found that she loved writing. For years writing was just a hobby, one she sometimes attacked with a vengeance and then set aside for months at a time. When the time came to give completing a book a serious try, she was ready. Guardian Angel, a Western historical romance, was written at her kitchen table. Not long after she mailed it to a publisher, she discovered the local RWA chapter, Heart of Dixie, and joined. She knew right away that these were her people, and she hasn't wandered far since. Apparently unable to say no, she has served as conference chairman, president, luncheon chairman, and vice president. Easily bored, she soon deviated from historical romance into time travel, fairy-tale romance, and romantic suspense. When she's not writing, Linda can be found at hockey games (where she's a season ticket holder for the local team), a meeting of writers (a necessity and a joy that she will never give up), or doing the family thing with an ever-growing and wonderful family.

    MIDNIGHT MOONLIGHT

Claire threw a pair of jeans, two t-shirts, and a handful of underwear into her backpack. She’d already dropped in the most basic of toiletries, so there wasn’t room for much. Simon urged her to hurry. She’d never seen him like this, tense and irritated and more than a little anxious. His eyes had started to glow red, just a little. Normally they only did that during sex, so she was a bit taken aback.

So far being a werewolf — for a little more than six months, now — came with more advantages than disadvantages. She finally had the great metabolism she’d always wanted. The jeans she’d just packed were her skinny jeans! Sex with Simon was great, but then it had been pretty spectacular before he’d bitten her. The vampire that had once lived in this apartment building had moved out shortly after Claire had turned, not caring for the two-to-one disadvantage.

Two months ago she’d finally given in to Simon’s suggestion that she quit her job. They’d been living together since then. It hadn’t taken her any time at all to adjust to a musician/werewolf’s schedule. Up all night, sleeping until after noon, making love and eating whatever she wanted and basking in the moonlight as they desired. She had the perfect life.

So three nights out of every month she turned into a monster with fangs and claws and hair all over her body. At least she remained a blonde, even then. It was a small price to pay, and it wasn’t like she was the kind of monster who hurt people. At least, not yet. Would she? Simon said werewolves were like people, in that some were bad and some were good. Some were smart and others… not so much.

Some survived and lived a long, long time. Others did not.

She zipped her backpack shut and turned to face Simon. Even after all this time, when she looked at him her heart did funny things. She loved him, so much. Longish dark hair, chiseled features, nice butt, and great eyes. Whether they were tinged with red or not, his dark eyes were intense. He had always seen right through her.

But her attraction to him was much more than physical. They were connected at a soul deep level. She was drawn to him, and as much as she liked his looks and his body and his sexy voice and the orgasms, this was more. So much more.

I’m ready, she said. As ready as I can be with a ten minute warning, anyway. Now will you tell me what’s going on? He’d received a phone call not long after they’d gotten out of bed, far too late into the afternoon for any self-respecting woman, and now this.

He took her hand and she hurried to keep pace with him as he headed out of their bedroom and for the front door. His legs were so much longer than hers she had to run to keep up. He snagged a plain, black duffel bag along the way.

Time to go, he said sharply.

I know that, but to where? And for how long?

He glanced back to her, then, and she saw something else new in his eyes. Sadness. I haven’t decided where, and it’s likely we’re not coming back.
