    MacKenzie Silver Howard grunted as she dragged the bulky reel holding the water hose around to the side of the house. Finally she had it positioned next to the wide stone chimney.

    Drat! Another fingernail snapped painfully short and she drenched her face, hair and upper body before she figured out how to attach the pressure extension for washing windows.

    At last she directed the strong spray toward the high clerestory window on the left of the chimney. This final major chore and the house would be clean inside and out. The roof still needed repairing, there was a leak in the second bedroom and both front and back steps had loose bricks. But Tony should be pleased that she had tackled all the cleaning.

    She hoped he would be pleased, but Tony had changed since they came to live with his mother in Helford, Alabama. He wasn't the sweet, caring young man who brought MacKenzie out of the shell in which she'd lived for seven years.

    During her junior year of college her parents and younger sister died in a head-on auto crash on their way home after visiting MacKenzie. She zombied through the funerals, the final weeks of the school year. She went home, sold the house and furnishings, kept and stored very few things. And determined she would never let anyone else into her heart for fear of losing them.

    After graduating with a major in Human Resources she was hired by Mid-Georgia Insurance Holdings, rising to Assistant to the HR Director within five years. In the early spring Tony applied for a job with Mid-Georgia, but with his spotty employment history the Director rejected him and MacKenzie had to give Tony the bad news.
