Yes. Oh, yes, being a twelve-year-old boy was very different. After Christmas it was.

As far as I could tell, my hands still looked the same. Still the smooth, boyish hands that had been smacked repeatedly by a ruler when I lived with the Copelands. The scar was still visible just above my pointing finger on my right hand where Derrick, the man-size fourteen-year-old I shared a room with when I was just ten years old actually carried out his threat of touching his cigarette to my skin if I told on him. And the Smiths couldn't understand why I didn't want to refer to him as my brother.

All the years I spent in foster care were visible on my small body—at least, to me. And they didn't go away as I grew. I wondered how many more marks and scars would appear on my body, ensuring I never forgot each and every previous home or family I never really belonged to. But this time, I hoped—I prayed—that there'd never be a new house to walk to after school, a new man or woman of the house to fear, or a new stranger asking me to call her mom.

There could be only one who would ever be mom to me. The one who never asked me to call her anything at all. The one who let me be me. The one who taught me what love is.

The one and only Marie.

Just the thought of her name sent shivers down my spine. The sound of each syllable echoed in my mind as they combined with the image of her: that smile, those eyes, that one-of-a-kind, strong, warming, scented embrace.

Everything changed when my foster agent Frances let go of my chubby little hand right at the bottom of the wide, wood-planked steps leading up to the front door of my new home. The house on Broad Street was freshly painted in soft blue, the color of the sky, and the big maple trees surrounding it on all sides seemed to protect it—and all who entered it—from harm.

And there stood my Marie.

I couldn't help but think of her that way. I was her first foster child. Her only. She was my mother alone, the graceful, feminine woman who made mom slip right out of my mouth within mere months no matter how much I tried not to speak my boyish thoughts and dreams aloud. I didn't want to ruin the beautiful dream I was living, didn't want to snap myself right out of the fantasy and back to some harsh reality too much like all my previous foster care experiences.

But it didn't happen. I was still there, living in my own room in that same house, the one Marie devoted every minute to making as welcoming as possible for me.

There I stood, as grateful as ever, well past my twelfth birthday and closer to my thirteenth, peering into the full-length mirror hanging on the back of my bedroom door. Things were changing, no matter how much I wanted to freeze the moments in time and ensure I'd never have to leave my life with Marie.
