THE APHRODITE SCROLLS
Sunlight reflected onto the marbled surface of the open-air room in which Aphrodite stood. Columns lined the circular room, the floor was lowered, the edge of which was framed with a couch covered in cushions and pillows. In the middle of the room, a goddess of pure perfection and radiant lust leaned over a pedestal on which an ornate bowl of water rested. Staring at the water’s clear surface, she watched as, far from the clouds around Olympus, down in the fields of Greece, two mortals explored each other’s bodies, their moans echoing from the bowl.
You’re enjoying that a bit too much.
Aphrodite glanced from the basin to see who was interrupting her. She startled for a moment, as the figure stepped through the archway into the pillared room. Before her stood an aged twin of herself, mature, the age of motherhood and not maidenhood. She was clad in a dress that hid more than it revealed but still managed to convey lust and desire. This was her double, the older goddess Aphrodite Ourania, she that oversaw the love of men and gods.
I think you don’t enjoy it enough. You’ve turned your work into a job, not a passion,
the younger quipped. She, Aphrodite Pandemos, stood and turned fully from the pedestal and walked from the centre of the room to sit on the couch that encircled it. What is it that has brought you out of the shadows today?
Ourania gave the younger goddess a bitter look and strode into the room to look at the surface of the water with a smirk before looking away with a shake of her head. I don’t live in the shadows, I just don’t live in the commoner’s view as you do.
She moved to take a seat next to Pandemos. While the younger goddess lounged amongst the pillows, Ourania sat carefully, back straight and chest pushed firmly out. You’ve been busy trying to make a conquest that you really shouldn’t be attempting.
Pandemos laid the back of her hand over her eyes and let out a soft sigh. Will you just come out with it, I’ve had a long, hard day keeping things long and hard.
She looked out from under her hand with a smirk. And I’d like to get back to it if you don’t mind.
Enough of your girlish mirth. I don’t care when you dabble with demigods, nor when you make merry with the human heroes. Make no mistake however, I will not allow you tempt Ares.
The older goddess stared intently at the younger, enunciating her last words.
The younger goddess sat up with a look of annoyance on her face. "Will not allow? While it is you that's in charge of god-fucking, you are not the one in command of whom desires the embrace of a woman. His desire for this woman, she said, gesturing to herself,
is by my will alone."
"And it is by my will, Ourania retorted, lifting her chin,
to say whom may lust for men, and I have not given you that permission for him."
Pandemos jumped to her feet, standing on the couch and looking down at Ourania. You are joking! Beyond the fact that I lay whomever I please because I am the goddess of love, our division is explicit - I’m making him want me, not the reverse.
She jumped down from the couch and stood, folding her arms over her breasts. Ares is mine, not yours.
She turned from the older goddess with a snort.
Ourania stood, hands resting together on her midsection. Too long has this gray area existed between us. Ares is mine, not yours, and it’s time to settle that fact and our division of power. Now.
Pandemos turned back to stare. You’re suggesting more rules?
She arched an eyebrow. Or are you suggesting that old idea again?
Yes, I am demanding that we truly balance our power. I absorb you, and all that you are, including your godly influences.
Or I absorb you.
Pandemos retorted.
I don’t believe that would be the correct path.
Ourania stated. Besides, I can ensure you don’t get a choice. With the appetites that Zeus has, I’m the only one that can make the mortals fall for him.
Zeus favours females exclusively.
Pandemos said. Zeus needs me, not you.
Zeus is a god,
Ourania pointed out. I am the one to grant love and lust upon gods. Your influence over commoners and women and whores is not strong enough to entice him.
The younger goddess scowled for a moment and then her eyes brightened. How about a contest then?
A contest?
Ourania paused in consideration.
To see which of us truly deserves the power. Whoever wins gains control of the other and absorbs her.
Pandemos smiled. A contest of lust. Each challenges the other to complete a conquest. Whichever wins the most conquests, wins the contest and becomes Aphrodite Areia.
...Lover of Ares. Interesting proposal. And how will we judge the winner of these conquests?
Ourania smiled, her cheeks glowing, as did Pandemos’, with the excitement of such a contest. While older, she was still a goddess of lust who loved what she did.
An innocent judge of course!
A virgin!
Athena!
they both yelled out together. They smiled together, each lost in their thoughts of potential challenges to give the other. Pandemos squinted at a specific thought she knew the older wouldn’t have.
Ourania nodded. I think this is by far the best idea you have had yet. I’ll surely beat you, get your power, and have a good time doing it. Send for Athena and let’s begin.
I agree with your first and third points, along with getting this started. Give me a moment and I’ll send one of my messenger birds.

Athena arrived to see the two love goddesses happily scrawling on small scraps of parchment. Each little scroll was no longer than an index finger and half as tall.
The only rule is that we can only directly interfere once.
Said Pandemos. You know, to get things going.
Yes,
Ourania nodded. And whatever pair of names Athena selects, we must do them, whether they are without our realm of influence or not.
Names?
Athena asked, marching deeper into the round room.
Ah, you’re here.
Ourania nodded.
Yes, names,
said the younger. Fifteen each to keep things well and truly random.
Before rolling up her scrolls, Pandemos placed a kiss on the names, for luck. She was rolling
