About this ebook
Balto, the great Alaska sled dog, has been dead since 1933. But he still stands larger-than-life on Dogdom's Mount Olympus, where the world's great canines are immortalized. Yet few people know Baltos true story. Only one small part has been told, and even it has been distorted. Several Balto books have been written. There's even a Balto animated movie, but it, too, is largely fiction. (Balto was NOT part wolf!) Like the books, the movie leaves off where this book begins and tells the best part of the story. Balto was only three years old when he helped carry serum across Alaska from Nenana to Nome to save the town's children from diphtheria. As leader of the last dog team in the life-saving relay race, he became an overnight sensation a BONEa fide international celebrity. But much more happened after that. Balto lived for eight more years. His days unfolded like a sled expedition to the North Pole, carrying him in an exhilarating rush over smooth snow one minute, an icy hummock the next. And how does the new story end? With a heart-thumping surprise that you can't imagine and neither could have Balto. Hook up your harness, step into Balto's booties, and mush off to Balto's true story.

Reviews for The Adventures Of Balto
3 ratings1 review
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was definitely an interesting read and one that I found I was caught up in for since almost no one knows much about Balto's later years besides he was a dog who brought the serum to Nome. From there Patricia Chargot takes us onto the whirlwind years that followed the year of triumph for Balto - the bad years and the good years. The author did a great job to include pronunciation for some of the Norwegian names although one or two were left out that should have been included with pronunciation. Furthermore even with as much fiction was included there were parts of educational history that introduced us to a world that we couldn't imagine from the husky breeder to a serum run than to nickelodeons and dime museums before hitting a city that would open their zoos to a sled-dog team. The only reason why this book doesn't rate any higher for me is the fact that even though the author is suppose to be writing about Balto I think she spent a lot more time on the spurned Togo. Don't get me wrong for I enjoyed learning about Toga but from the author I got the feeling that she didn't care about her subject but would rather give herself to Togo instead but was made to only imply to him to appease the crowd taste for Balto - i.e. we are given the sire of Togo but nowhere is made any mention of Balto's parentage even though he is the main dog of the story. Rather a tasteless continuation of a squabble that I am sure the dogs didn't care about but much rather suffered since of the sides involved in man's emotions. Otherwise it is a good read and even somewhat emotional. For those into adventure, sled dogs or even Balto I would truly recommend at least one reading.
