Liz glared at the string of lights. It was a humbling moment to admit being outsmarted by a jumbled heap of bulbs and wires. She plucked a little red light out of its socket, and then she stuck it between her lips where the bulb traded places with one of its brothers, who now got the spot of honor on the strand. The lights came to life; then with a flicker, they went dark. A loud groan escaped her lips, as did the bulb.
Seriously,
she grumbled, searching for the loose bulb now among the pile of Christmas lights in her lap. The search was fruitless.
Mom,
she called towards the kitchen. "I really appreciate y'all accommodating us last minute, but we really don't need to do a tree and stuff. Hailee is fourteen. Teenagers don’t care about Christmas trees, and it's already Christmas Eve."
