Chapter One
Always Make a Good First Impression
Tanisha had landed an internship with Outlook International. One of the biggest fashion magazines in the world. She imagined she would be jet setting across the globe to London, Milan, Paris. She had envisioned a glossy office just like the one in Ugly Betty. She laughed at how naïve she was when she discovered a grim building. She noticed that the magazine shared the property with the company that printed the volumes and a small photography firm. She was disappointed, but the exterior could be forgiven when she entered the reception area. The three companies kept the grounds impeccable. Walking trails would be a nice distraction at lunch, she thought. Fresh air after lunch to help avoid that afternoon slump was a great routine for her. She would still have a cup of coffee come three o’clock if she could, but the walk helped put off that food coma. She was a hearty, but healthy eater.
As an intern she knew she needed to present herself in classic style and truly look the part. She did well, wearing a simple sheath dress, in dark burnished-orange, summer wool. It was simple and sleeveless and showed off all of her assets. She was petite but had beautifully muscled arms and legs and was shapely in all the right places. She had great C-cup boobs, and just enough junk in the trunk.
She was also stunningly beautiful. Her big-wide chocolate eyes, against her medium caramel skin, drew people in, and she had a knack for getting her way in most situations. It wasn’t that she was a manipulator, her eyes were just soulful and people genuinely wanted to make things work between themselves and this very attractive young woman. She did also have those luscious lips that could pout without trying, causing anyone with a heart to melt.
But she wanted to play fair. She was now twenty five years old and was beginning to think of herself as a powerful young adult. It suited her to be in control of her own destiny. She had just enough experience to know what she did and didn’t value in others. She knew for sure what she wanted for herself. To be an editor of a high fashion magazine had been her dream for years.
She decided in the days before the internship started that if she could be assigned to edit even a few articles, she would consider these three months a success. Editing articles would pave the way for becoming a contributing editor first, a staff editor next and then eventually landing a role as a chief editor.
Yeah! She was ready for this challenge, and although she normally would have been flattered, she was unfazed when more than one head had turned as she walked through the door that morning. As heads continued to turn when she was being introduced to the staff and the outside companies involved in the production of the monthly fashion magazine, she began to find it tiresome. She wanted to be taken seriously, not ogled.
She was a smart girl. She knew how to act professionally and planned to score a permanent job from this internship. All she had to do was to keep her head on straight, her nose to the grindstone and avoid getting involved in office gossip. That would be easy.
Or so she thought. That was before she laid eyes on an absolutely gorgeous specimen of a man, who she saw from across the room, causing her panties to dampen without even thinking. It was a purely chemical reaction! She had never been attracted to white guys although she was open to it, but none struck her as handsome as he, with his beautiful un-freckled white skin, just kissed by the sun. Overall, though, it was the creaminess of his complexion, so soft and moist looking, that startled her. One look sent a jolt through her that reached her very core as a woman.
He was everything she was not. She was five one, he about six feet two inches tall. She had brown eyes, his were a crystalline blue. She had a coarse, pitch black head of curly hair, and he had a thick shiny silken mop of straight, dark brown hair. Her hair was tightly groomed; his looked like he just rolled out of bed. Her features were strong and prominent, and his were delicate and soft around the edges. She was black and he was white.
She had gotten carried away with her assessment of the mystery man, and spaced out on Kelly who was introducing her to two writers.
"Oh, sorry, I just saw someone I thought I knew
