Benny Boyle and the Haunted Teddy: Benny Boyle Mysteries, #2
()
About this ebook
Kevin Newman didn't really need a teddy bear. He was a big boy now, nearly nine. Bez was just a toy he always had. He wasn't really afraid of the dark. He knew there was nothing to be afraid of. The ghosts in the night were just curtains and the goblins were just things on the wardrobe. Then one night, Bez attacked him.

Benny Boyle and the Haunted Teddy - Scott D Bryant
Chapter 1: Jumping Bez
KEVIN NEWMAN’S LITTLE brother Tyler was such a nuisance. Every night, before going to bed, Tyler would ask Kevin for Bez, his teddy bear, and Kevin would say no.
Why do you want my teddy for anyway?
Kevin would ask. You've got so many of your own already.
Because Bez smiles,
Tyler would answer. My teddies just sit around and look dumb. They're scary at night, yours isn't.
Kevin didn’t really need a teddy, I mean, he was nearly nine and so wasn't afraid of the dark... much. It's just that Kevin was used to Bez, he was a comfort, especially when the lights went off... not that he was afraid. He just liked to have Bez with him, to reassure him that the goblins weren't real and there really were no ghosts. Even if he thought he saw them, he knew they weren't real, even if he didn't have Bez.
This night was no different from any other. Little brother Tyler asked for Bez, Kevin said no, Tyler went to bed and Kevin went to bed half an hour later with Bez. As Kevin was lying there in the dark, he looked around the room. The curtains didn't look like spooky ghosts waiting to swoop him as he slept, but Kevin held Bez close; the stuff on his wardrobe didn't look like Goblins waiting to eat him when he slept, but Kevin held Bez even closer; and the dark spaces under the wardrobe didn't really hide monsters that would do terrible stuff to him in the night because Kevin held Bez as close as a teddy can be held.
Then Kevin fell asleep.
Kevin was disturbed by something sometime during the night. Still half asleep, he reached around his bed for Bez. He didn't feel anything. Maybe Bez had fallen on the floor. He rolled over and looked but he wasn't there. Now at this stage, a younger child would start to get scared, but Kevin was nearly nine, so he—
Something bumped into the back of Kevin's head. Kevin jumped but didn't turn around. There was nothing to be scared of, he told himself. He probably just imagined—
It bumped again.
Kevin rolled on his back and turned his head. What he saw frightened him so much, he couldn't even scream.
Bez was sitting on Kevin's pillow with glowing red eyes and a row of sharp pointy teeth sticking up from his smiling mouth.
Kevin took a deep breath to yell but Bez jumped onto his chest and began bouncing up and down.
Well, everybody knows what to do when being attacked by a monster in the middle of the night, it's easy, and that's exactly what Kevin did.
He put his head under the covers and yelled. Everybody knows that no night time scary thing can get through a blanket you put over your head, and it has to go away.
But it didn't. The bear kept jumping and Kevin started yelling until his Mum came into the room and turned the light on – which, by the way, is the other sure defence against night time scary things.
What's going on here,
Kevin's mum growled.
It's Bez, he's gone crazy,
Kevin said from under his blankets.
Don't be silly,
his mum said. Bez is right there on your bed. Get your head out of there and see for yourself.
I know he's there, but he's possessed!
Where did you hear that word?
It was on television.
Then perhaps you shouldn't be watching it. Now get your head out from those covers while I'm talking to you.
But Bez—
I've got him.
Kevin felt the
